  • Excellent podcast with some questionable guests

On the index investing episode, you can always trust Vin Scully to overcomplicate this type of investing. If it can be made more complex, into the open arms of financial advisors you shall go.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

624 personal insurance: DNA, dollars and the 40% premium shock!
Q: What should healthcare workers do now to prepare for October's enforcement and potential premium changes?
Speak with an advisor before October to review current cover, understand which policies can transition out of super or stay in, compare pricing across super funds and retailers, and plan for potential changes in occupation ratings and claims processes. Ensuring you have an advisor to assist with claims and aftercare is especially valuable.
624 personal insurance: DNA, dollars and the 40% premium shock!
Q: How does the law impact existing policies or people who already have a genetic test on file?
If someone already has a genetic test, the ban mainly prevents new discrimination for future underwriting, but existing disclosures and any exclusions or loadings can still apply based on medical history and other factors. People may need to review existing policies to see if terms can be improved with a new insurer or product.
624 personal insurance: DNA, dollars and the 40% premium shock!
Q: Matt, can you explain what was happening before the new genetic testing rules were introduced, and what the new rules change?
Before the moratorium, insurers could ask about genetic testing at any level of cover and could use results to affect underwriting. The new rules prohibit asking about predictive genetic testing for new life, TPD, trauma or income protection cover, effective around October 8, 2026, and they require disclosure of medical history still—not the genetic test itself.
610 invest inside vs outside of super, retirement case study + retiree pitfalls with Martin McGrath from Retire Right
Q: What is the general hierarchy of where to invest money as you accumulate wealth?
Max out concessional contributions first to benefit from lower tax inside super, then consider non-concessional (voluntary) contributions for additional growth, keeping in mind caps and long-term goals.
609 super in retirement with Martin McGrath from Retire Right
Q: What exactly is the cap for moving money into the pension phase, and how does this interact with plan timing and future indexation?
The current cap is around two million dollars for pension phase, and timing matters because the cap is indexed and may change; if you trigger the transfer later, you might access a higher cap, but in most cases you should optimize timing to maximize the amount moved at zero tax.
