  • Great podcast

I’ve always enjoyed listening to Dave - anyone who has achieved what he has, at his age, is worth paying attention to. Was sad when his previous podcast stopped so this was a welcome addition to the library. Hayden’s depth of knowledge across multiple topics, delivered clearly and sensibly, makes for a top weekly drop. I especially like the format - feels like you’re listening in to a couple of mates working through financial scenarios realtime.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

66. Q&A: Ethical ETFs
Q: Should I invest in the US because it's more ESG heavy, and how should I think about ETFs like DZZF?
The hosts explain that ESG investing is a personal choice with trade-offs, noting that DZZF is a diversified ESG option but may underperform at times due to its screening and exclusion effects; they recommend aligning criteria with personal values and considering long-term costs and diversification.
61. Q&A: Debt recycling
Q: Can you debt recycle and still dollar-cost average with a debt recycled loan?
Yes, you can dollar-cost-average by redrawing and investing in regular intervals; however, the deductibility is tied to the portion actually invested, and there are tax considerations if the money isn't generating accessible income.
61. Q&A: Debt recycling
Q: What is the trade-off between waiting to meet the debt recycling threshold and investing now?
The hosts discuss opportunity cost versus tax deductibility, emphasizing that the long-term benefits of debt recycling often outweigh short-term missed market gains, and that strategic timing should consider personal circumstances, tax rules, and investment horizon.
61. Q&A: Debt recycling
Q: If you have a debt recycling loan, can you sell a position and still maintain deductibility when acquiring a new asset?
To maintain deductibility you generally need to repay and redraw the loan rather than simply selling the asset and buying another; the new draw becomes fresh debt for which deductibility is reassessed, and wash-sale-like scenarios can complicate deductibility.
61. Q&A: Debt recycling
Q: How do you decide whether to use a limit order or a market order when investing in ETFs on a regular auto-invest schedule?
In general, market orders are used by default for liquid assets because they ensure execution at the current market price, while limit orders are mainly considered for very low liquidity stocks or to cap upside when you want to avoid a price spike; Pearler's Auto Invest typically uses market orders unless liquidity is very low.
