Progressão is a book, a podcast, and a long-term thinking project focused on football, learning, and skilful human behaviour. Our work approaches football from a complex, holistic, and ecological perspective, where players and all football actors are understood as living beings always in correspondence with their environment.

#186 DISCUSSÃO MUNDO: Jarkko Tuomisto – skill, groove, and the game
Q: How do you see build up and the goalkeeper's role evolving in modern football?
Build up is integral and evolving; it requires understanding the tactical aims of the team, adapting to pressure, and initiating plays from back with proper technique and timing. I focus on body shape, positioning, and decision-making under pressure, while also recognizing that different players may deliver the ball in different ways. The key is making the build-up a functional, real-environment skill rather than a rigid drill.
#186 DISCUSSÃO MUNDO: Jarkko Tuomisto – skill, groove, and the game
Q: What does skillfulness mean to you in coaching and how do you communicate it to players?
Skillfulness stems from perceiving and acting within the environment rather than rigidly following fixed techniques. I teach players to read the situation, anticipate, and adapt their movements in context. Rather than teaching isolated techniques, I emphasize representative training, real-world variability, and the relationship between the goalkeeper and teammates so actions are functional in game-like settings.
#186 DISCUSSÃO MUNDO: Jarkko Tuomisto – skill, groove, and the game
Q: So Jarkko, how did you go from Finland to international stages?
I started by recognizing there was more to coaching in Finland, searched for information globally, and built a network through patient pursuit—visiting clubs, attending courses, and eventually moving to Italy. The pathway began with reaching out to a goalkeeper coach union president, attending a pre-season camp, and continually pursuing opportunities across Europe; seven years of travel and networking led to Serie D and beyond with a growing international network.
