  • Great conversations with local progressive leaders

By offering a counter to special interests’ eschatological portrayal of Portland, Kip and Tim are providing much needed balance to local media. I appreciate how they endeavored to support progressive candidates in the 2024 local elections, providing a platform for campaigns that don’t have the luxury of United for Portland/People for Portland bankrolling. Their in-depth interviews with local policy officials and social service providers following the election have been just as thought-provoking.... more

  • Excellent Deep Dive on Local Politics

So appreciative of this show and the platform it is giving to the giant field of candidates vying to fill the newly created council seats. In an environment where everyone is so hyper focused on national politics, we need more conversations like this around what we can do and who we can support to make change on a local level.

  • Progressive Disease

Progressive policies have ruined cities like Portland. We need to repeal Measure 110, elect a DA who prosecutes crime, and stop electing far-left politicians.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 53: Mitch Green, Portland City Councilor District 4
Q: How do you handle criticism that focus on issues like hot dogs or street vendors distracts from bigger policy goals?
I acknowledge the public concerns about everyday life, but I also explain how practical policy levers—like street vending regulation—can support small businesses and lower barriers to entry for underserved residents, linking these efforts to broader goals like housing and equity.
Episode 53: Mitch Green, Portland City Councilor District 4
Q: What are your top priorities for the next two years?
Advancing social housing, instituting strong tenant protections, expanding oversight of budget and program implementation, and making governance more responsive to constituents while simplifying bureaucratic processes.
Episode 53: Mitch Green, Portland City Councilor District 4
Q: How has the shift away from a commissioner-led system affected day-to-day governance and oversight?
The new structure pushes us to be more deliberate and transparent, with oversight taking a central role in holding agencies to account and ensuring laws and budgets are implemented as intended.
Episode 39: Valdez Bravo, President of Health Care For All Oregon
Q: What can people do to get involved or support universal health care in Oregon?
Listeners are encouraged to visit hcao.org to sign a statement of support, receive updates, and consider becoming a member, donor, or volunteer across committees and chapter networks statewide.
Episode 39: Valdez Bravo, President of Health Care For All Oregon
Q: What distinguishes Health Care For All Oregon from other approaches, and what lessons have you learned from Massachusetts, Vermont, and others?
Bravo explains that unlike states with mixed models, Oregon's goal is a true universal health plan with everybody in and nobody out, backed by a strong finance committee and actuarial analysis to ensure sustainability; lessons include the challenges of buy-in and the importance of a state-led, coalition-based effort rather than a top-down legislative package.
