  • The city paper of podcasts

I listen almost every morning while I’m getting ready for work. A cup of joe and Claudia and friends keeping me informed and entertained. They do a great job of summarizing local news, suggesting events and restaurants, and apparently having a pretty good time creating a daily podcast. Thanks y’all. It brightens my day.

  • Hard to find the news

It is often difficult to separate the news from the commentary on the Friday News Roundup. I want to be a resident informed enough to feel connected and contribute to everyday conversation. An accusation of “white-liberal racism” on the February 6 edition is an obstacle to that goal.

  • Thank you!

Thank you for using your platform to ask Sen Wyden about his continued arms support to Israel. The safety of Jewish people in Israel cannot exist without the safety of the Palestinians, so to me his answer was empty. He is also responsible for this genocide and we'll never forget.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

‘Your City Could Be Better’: How One City Beat Restrictive Zoning — Presented By City Cast Portland
Q: What can listeners take away to improve their own cities?
If there is a housing crisis, zoning is likely a core part of the problem, and citizens should engage local officials to push for more housing and less restrictive zoning to reduce costs and homelessness.
‘Your City Could Be Better’: How One City Beat Restrictive Zoning — Presented By City Cast Portland
Q: Is floor area ratio universal, and how does it compare across cities?
FAR is not universal; some places use height limits or newer form-based codes, and even within New Haven, FAR was among the highest in New England, illustrating how different regulatory tools shape outcomes.
‘Your City Could Be Better’: How One City Beat Restrictive Zoning — Presented By City Cast Portland
Q: How would you quantify the housing crisis you saw in New Haven?
Studies showed a shortage of about 8,000 affordable housing units, with tens of thousands of families on waiting lists, highlighting a growing mismatch between demand and supply, especially for lower-income households.
‘Your City Could Be Better’: How One City Beat Restrictive Zoning — Presented By City Cast Portland
Q: Eli, what is zoning?
Zoning acts like a blanket over the city, shaping what can be built on land, how tall buildings can be, and the kinds of buildings that are allowed, a regulatory framework that affects living costs and daily life.
Mayor Keith Wilson on Keeping the Blazers, Fixing 911 Response Times, and His Efforts To End Homelessness
Q: What's the status of the Moda Center negotiations and the term sheet with RIP City Management?
We delivered on the core terms that were agreed in March and are close to a final deal; there will be changes as we gather more input, but the process must move forward with clear guidance from the council.
