  • The city paper of podcasts

I listen almost every morning while I’m getting ready for work. A cup of joe and Claudia and friends keeping me informed and entertained. They do a great job of summarizing local news, suggesting events and restaurants, and apparently having a pretty good time creating a daily podcast. Thanks y’all. It brightens my day.

  • Hard to find the news

It is often difficult to separate the news from the commentary on the Friday News Roundup. I want to be a resident informed enough to feel connected and contribute to everyday conversation. An accusation of “white-liberal racism” on the February 6 edition is an obstacle to that goal.

  • Thank you!

Thank you for using your platform to ask Sen Wyden about his continued arms support to Israel. The safety of Jewish people in Israel cannot exist without the safety of the Palestinians, so to me his answer was empty. He is also responsible for this genocide and we'll never forget.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Police Are Saying No to Mask Ban, Controversial City Shelter to Close, and Updates on Home Forward Drama
Q: What is driving the shutdown of the Pearl District overnight shelter?
The closure is framed as a budget-driven decision within the city's broader shelter system, though neighborhood groups and local councilors argue it reflects deeper concerns about livability and effectiveness, with debates about whether the shelter actually helps people into housing.
Our Mayor’s Surprising Sunday Routine, Kotek Blocks Shorter School Years, and Portland's Best Pizza
Q: Why is Governor Kotek pushing changes to instructional time in schools?
The hosts explain that Kotek is responding to budget gaps, with districts furloughing days to save money, but she aims to restore time by the 2027-2028 school year and address the broader funding crisis.
'Your City Could Be Better': Why Seattle Gives Every Voter $100 — Presented By City Cast Portland
Q: And what are the participation rates?
In 2023 participation was about 5% of people who received vouchers, which is higher than typical contributions rates elsewhere (around 2.5%). In 2025, participation seems higher due to mayoral campaigns, and overall voucher-driven contributions dominate the totals.
Mayor Wilson vs Reality, a Vision for the Waterfront, and a Controversial City Leadership Pick
Q: What else should Portland's popular mode of transportation be, beyond bikes and transit?
The group considered buses as a key part of the solution, with lively exchanges about making transit more appealing, affordable, and practical for daily use, including embracing bus rapid options and encouraging broader adoption.
'Your City Could Be Better': Why Portland’s Considering Hiring a Night Mayor
Q: What are the financial hurdles and governance steps to create this role?
Approval would require city council support, budget alignment, and a clear system for communicating with City Hall; funding would need to be identified (e.g., general fund vs. earmarked pot) and the role justified with measurable goals before full implementation.
