  • Bite sized movie fun

I’m not the biggest podcast person due to the length of the episodes, however, Leigh & Tim’s short episode lengths and to the point and direct (and also light and humorous) approach to talking about movies is very much up my alley. They’re both really nice people too. A nice and easy listen, it feels like you’re just talking with a friend after seeing a movie.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu worth a trip to the cinemas?
Q: How much was Pedro Pascal actually in the suit for this movie?
Tim and Deeny discuss how much of Pedro Pascal's performance in the helmet was physically on set versus voice work, noting the challenge of conveying emotion with the helmet on and the likelihood that much of the physical performance was handled by stunt actors and suit performers.
Zoe Pepper on Birthright’s satire and moral grey area
Q: But as a filmmaker, as the writer, director, what drew you to tell this story and bring it to the screen as a film?
I was drawn to exploring power dynamics within the family when adults move back in with parents, and I wanted to use satire to examine how middle-class privilege shapes those tensions while tying it to a real housing crisis in Australia.
Jasmin Tarasin and Courtney Collins on the destructive cycles of coercive control means to let go and begin again
Q: What was it like collaborating with a family member on such heavy material?
Directing my own son brought emotional depth but required careful support from dramaturgy and a close-knit crew to manage the sensitive content and ensure a safe, creative process.
Jasmin Tarasin and Courtney Collins on the destructive cycles of coercive control means to let go and begin again
Q: How did you approach representing coercive control authentically in the script?
We conducted extensive research with texts, experts, and frontline workers, and used lived experiences to ground the characters, aiming to portray the cycle with responsibility and empathy rather than sensationalism.
Jasmin Tarasin and Courtney Collins on the destructive cycles of coercive control means to let go and begin again
Q: How did the story come to you and what drew you to direct it?
I was drawn to the mother-child dynamic and the urgent real-world issues of coercive control; the process evolved from developing another feature and a documentary interest, leading to a collaborative approach that quickly gained momentum.
