Audio levels are way too low to hear even with my volume all the way up.

  • A partial review

Attempting to listen to my first episode of this podcast I was struck by how extraordinarily low the recording volume is.

  • Thank you for this incredible resource.

This podcast gives me an opportunity to explore and think about topics I never got to study or understand in any detail. It’s like sitting in on a university tutorial. Mentally and emotionally fulfilling; thank you very much.

  • Unlistenable sound quality, though at least the topic description sounds interesting. Constant weirdly loud lip smacking and uhhh ummm ahhhs. In general it needs a heavy hand with editing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MAGA & Masculinity with Amanda Marcotte
Q: What's going on in Texas right now with their Senate race?
Amanda explains Paxton's baggage, his impeachment and corruption concerns, and Tallarico's potential appeal to moderate voters among women who are uneasy about the Republican's grim, aggressive rhetoric; the dynamic is part of a broader pattern where the right leans into aggressive, gendered branding to win primaries.
Birthright citizenship with Anna O. Law
Q: How does the concept of 'jurisdiction thereof' get interpreted in the Trump v. Barbara case, and why is that argument considered flawed?
The argument hinges on claiming children of undocumented migrants are not subject to U.S. jurisdiction, which would deny birthright citizenship; this ignores historical practice and the fact that unauthorized presence and subsequent birth still fall under U.S. laws and territorial jurisdiction.
Birthright citizenship with Anna O. Law
Q: What is the constitutional risk in trying to revise birthright citizenship through executive action or non-constitutional means?
Executive orders cannot legally overturn constitutional provisions; the framers sought to protect birthright citizenship by putting it in the Constitution via Article V, making it resistant to simple political shifts and future legislation that could erode rights.
Birthright citizenship with Anna O. Law
Q: Could you explain why the framers chose broad language in the 14th Amendment instead of a narrower scope?
They chose broad language to address a long history of racial slavery and migrant status, ensuring that birthright citizenship would cover all persons born on U.S. soil, including the children of undocumented/temporary immigrants, so as to prevent a permanent underclass and to preserve mobility and rights for future generations.
New Year AMA
Q: What's the strongest case possible for us to be alarmed about reform?
There is substantial evidence that reform plans to implement extreme measures against immigrants, including concentration camps and mass surveillance, which threatens liberal democracy.
