  • Thank you for this incredible resource.

This podcast gives me an opportunity to explore and think about topics I never got to study or understand in any detail. It’s like sitting in on a university tutorial. Mentally and emotionally fulfilling; thank you very much.

  • Unlistenable sound quality, though at least the topic description sounds interesting. Constant weirdly loud lip smacking and uhhh ummm ahhhs. In general it needs a heavy hand with editing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

New Year AMA
Q: What's the strongest case possible for us to be alarmed about reform?
There is substantial evidence that reform plans to implement extreme measures against immigrants, including concentration camps and mass surveillance, which threatens liberal democracy.
New Year AMA
Q: Can we win an election by addressing material concerns enough to get 50% most of the time?
Lower income Americans often prioritize cultural issues over material issues, complicating election strategies.
Tenure with Deepa Das Acevedo
Q: What is the critique of tenure regarding the behavior of tenured professors?
Critics argue that tenure makes professors lazy or encourages bad behavior because they are guaranteed job security, though research and anecdotal evidence suggest this is an inaccurate view.
Tenure with Deepa Das Acevedo
Q: What accounts for the shift in academic employment from tenure track positions to non-tenure track positions?
The shift is largely due to the defunding of public education, the increased importance of research for institutional prestige, and a surplus of doctoral graduates who are willing to accept less secure employment.
Tenure with Deepa Das Acevedo
Q: What is tenure?
Tenure is a form of employment contract that exists primarily in the United States and Canada, providing job security by requiring just cause for termination rather than at-will employment policies.
