  • Still going strong

Having watched these cartoons over and over since childhood, it’s great to listen to a show that revisits these classic DCAU shows as well as the “Elseworlds” like young Justice or BATB. Highly recommend.

  • Bravo!

At the time of this review Cal and Liam have officially reviewed all 85 episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. I have listened to every one and these guys are the best in the business. Some of the episodes they were hard on surprised me but I never came away from a review without new thoughts and ideas. A few of their observations flat out blew my mind and made me go back and do my own rewatch. Bravo guys! Congratulations on this achievement!

  • Am I Blue?

Fortunately not when I listen to The DCAU Review. (I’m trying to make up for the DCAU Etrigan’s lack of rhyming.) I found out about this podcast thanks to the Watchtower Database, and I’m super glad that I did. I really enjoy listening as Cal and Liam assess each spotlighted DCAU episode by examining the individual aspects of plot, animation, music, and voice acting. I also appreciate that they extend their coverage beyond just the DCAU by applying their signature review style to episodes of... more

  • A great blend of opinions, history, and audio clips

Jonesing for a podcast where a few people talk about some of my favorite animated Batman movies, I was thrilled to discover The DCAU Review on the last day of 2023. The Long Halloween Part 1 and 2, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and Mask of the Phantasm are all covered along with many more movies and series. There’s a great blend of opinions, history, and audio clips. Great job, Cal and Liam.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 401 - The New Batman Adventures - Growing Pains
Q: Zach asks whether there was something in the random chemicals that changed Clayface's abilities, and whether this might explain his new powers.
Liam and the hosts discuss that the chemicals could have altered Clayface to create drones and new weaknesses, speculating that the runoff might have opened up new possibilities for his metamorphosis while leaving some openness about the exact nature of the substances.
Ep. 399 - Elseworlds - Batman: The Brave and The Bold - The Criss Cross Conspiracy
Q: Why didn't Katrina take off Batman's mask to reveal his true identity?
The hosts suggest that Katrina's single-minded pursuit of revenge against the Riddler, combined with vanity and a lack of exploration of the identity angle, kept her from addressing Batman's true identity; the writers prioritized the body swap plot and revenge narrative over that reveal.
Ep. 391- Static Shock - Linked
Q: If the show had a fifth Static Shock season, what one-time supporting character would you like to see return and why?
Cal suggests Professor Menace returning for a Soul Power-style crossover, while Liam prefers a playful, wacky revisit like a prehistoric adventure; both see potential to expand the series' legacy with a character who could bring back a different era or flavor to Static Shock's universe.
Ep. 390 – Elseworlds – Legion of Superheroes - Legacy
Q: What would have been a good storyline if Alexis returned for additional episodes?
A plausible route would be to have Alexis reappear as a descendant of Superman's foes with a family rivalry that tests the Legion and Superman across multiple episodes, possibly evolving into a more complex will-they-wont-they dynamic or a deeper rogues-galleried arc.
Ep. 386 - Elseworlds - The Batman - What Goes Up...
Q: Do you think that the Batmobile should be better equipped for any situation where it drives off a cliff?
Yes, the Batmobile should have contingency plans for such situations, potentially transforming into a flying vehicle or having parachutes.
