  • Incredible Resource!

PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf is a really thoughtful and engaging podcast, with conversations that go deeper than most. The artists featured aren’t just important to photography, they’re also great at speaking to their work, their process, and how it connects to the larger history of the medium. You can tell each episode is well researched, and it gives listeners a lot to think about, both in terms of photography itself and the personal decisions that shape an artist’s path. It’s definitely made me ... more

  • Left wanting

I miss Magic Hour. This feels like an hour+ of praise being exchanged back and forth, and griping about an “art world” that all participants seem to very much be a part of. When the work is talked about it feels superficial. I adore the work of the photographers featured, and I appreciate the hard work that likely goes into making this show, so I write this out of a plea for greater depth. For instance, the latest episode with Curran feels like 10 minutes is discussed about making a color photog... more

  • One of the best photo podcasts out there

Sasha Wolf is an insightful and engaging interviewer. I eagerly await every new episode. The ability to dive deep into the motivation, inspiration, history, and inner thoughts of Sasha’s guest makes for fascinating discussions. I’m almost always moved by the conversation, whether the subject is a well-known photographer or a new, rising talent. What Sasha does is truly reveal the humanity of her guests, allowing the listener to feel a sense of connection. I’ve learned so much over the years from... more

  • Some good guests, interviews leave a lot on the table

I know that everyone on this show is deeply familiar with the world of critiques and so I hope they don’t mind it being applied here. I’ll start by noting that getting photographers to talk is sort of a tall order in many circumstances. They are usually better at pictures, after all. But still, this is a podcast that operates from a niche corner within a niche corner of the art world. What I mean is that most guests seem to be largely of the same milieu - which is small even in the small photogr... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cheryle St. Onge & Scott Offen on Intimate Collaboration and Photographing the Personal.
Q: Grace is not easy to know. How did you handle pacing and keeping the project from becoming repetitive?
Scott describes limiting shooting sessions, maintaining variety through different environments, and ensuring the book remains a holistic conversation between photographer and subject, with the pacing guided by natural seasons and long-term collaboration.
Cheryle St. Onge & Scott Offen on Intimate Collaboration and Photographing the Personal.
Q: But I wonder how you navigated that very consent question.
Cheryle explains that consent is complex and cannot be fully known, emphasizing ongoing dialogue, the visibility of long-term connection, and the reality that some aspects of consent may remain unsettled while the process unfolds.
Historian and Curator Audrey Sands on Lisette Model, Photo History, and the Archive.
Q: Can you talk about that and then bring us into the book that just came out, the Jazz Pictures?
Audrey lays out how the Jazz Pictures project emerged from decades of archival research, detailing how the negatives and prints reveal a hidden decade of Lisette Modell's work, and explains the decision to publish despite the artist's reluctance or silence about the material.
Eli Durst on Reframing Documentary, Learning as Process, and Community Engagement.
Q: How do you think about the balance between open-ended images and viewer interpretation in your books?
He argues that avoiding captions and relying on formal, strange, and ambiguous compositions invites viewers to engage with the images more actively, while his background in editorial storytelling provides a framework for how those images can still connect to broader social questions.
Eli Durst on Reframing Documentary, Learning as Process, and Community Engagement.
Q: Tell us about your publications and how they relate to your broader question about social forces and belonging.
Durst describes three monographs—The Community, The Four Pillars, and The Children's Melody—each built around the tension between individual identity and collective belonging, with a shift from more documentary-toned work to increasingly staged or aspirational imagery that complicates the line between truth and fabrication.
