  • Left wanting

I miss Magic Hour. This feels like an hour+ of praise being exchanged back and forth, and griping about an “art world” that all participants seem to very much be a part of. When the work is talked about it feels superficial. I adore the work of the photographers featured, and I appreciate the hard work that likely goes into making this show, so I write this out of a plea for greater depth. For instance, the latest episode with Curran feels like 10 minutes is discussed about making a color photog... more

  • One of the best photo podcasts out there

Sasha Wolf is an insightful and engaging interviewer. I eagerly await every new episode. The ability to dive deep into the motivation, inspiration, history, and inner thoughts of Sasha’s guest makes for fascinating discussions. I’m almost always moved by the conversation, whether the subject is a well-known photographer or a new, rising talent. What Sasha does is truly reveal the humanity of her guests, allowing the listener to feel a sense of connection. I’ve learned so much over the years from... more

  • Some good guests, interviews leave a lot on the table

I know that everyone on this show is deeply familiar with the world of critiques and so I hope they don’t mind it being applied here. I’ll start by noting that getting photographers to talk is sort of a tall order in many circumstances. They are usually better at pictures, after all. But still, this is a podcast that operates from a niche corner within a niche corner of the art world. What I mean is that most guests seem to be largely of the same milieu - which is small even in the small photogr... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ed Templeton on Influence, Process, and an Insider’s Approach to Photography - Episode 107
Q: You describe photography as a constant for you and as a process of archiving and organizing. How does that shape your daily practice?
It drives a continuous loop of shooting, selecting, scanning, and titling; building an archive is ongoing and informs future books, with a pragmatic preference for manageable steps rather than chasing one grand project at a time.
Curran Hatleberg on Revisiting Past Work, Staying Present, and the Ethics of his Practice - Episode 106
Q: How did Blood Green come together with the help of Paul Sheik and TBW Books, and what was the printing process like in Verona?
Curran shares that TBW and Paul were instrumental in aligning Blood Green with River's Dream, and discusses printing in Verona with Trifolio, balancing color and black-and-white sections to achieve a cohesive, deliberate sequence.
Curran Hatleberg on Revisiting Past Work, Staying Present, and the Ethics of his Practice - Episode 106
Q: Curran, could you set up the three books you've published and how they relate to each other?
Curran explains Lost Coast originated from teaching in Eureka and the surrounding landscape; River's Dream examines the southeastern U.S. with a heavy atmospheric sense; Blood Green, written over the same decade, is a tighter, more open continuation with a similar design language but a distinct sequence, forming a continuum rather than a separate collection.
April Watson - Episode 101
Q: How do you decide the focus for expanding your photography collection?
April explains that it is based on a mix of budgetary constraints and the need for diversity in representation within the collection.
April Watson - Episode 101
Q: Tell us your journey into being an important influential curator in the museum world.
April shares her 18-year journey at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, highlighting her artistic background and experiences that led her to curatorial work.
