  • Fortnightly photo inspiration

This is hands down the best photography podcast out there. Ben Smith chats with a diverse mix of amazing photographers, blending sympathetic questioning with his very British humour.

  • Hugely informative

Ben has built up an important collection of chats and discussions with a huge range of photographers. This is a massively important resource and a really good listen. The podcast has introduced me to lots of photographers I’d never heard of - TIP: Don’t just listen to episodes featuring the photographers you know. There’s gold here so make sure you did for it :)

A really amazing podcast with interesting guests. I just wish Ben would let the guests finish their sentences and pause for a second. It feels like he’s getting a bit ahead of the conversation and cuts off the guests sometimes. Thank you.

  • Insightful

Ben Smith’s podcast is one of the best on photography. I especially like that he focuses on the photographer rather than foolishly trying to make it a conversation between two equals. Two pet peeves: first, he is at times too intimidated by the photographers to push back or probe further when necessary (Ian Barry’s offensive comments re sexual harassment, Chris Anderson’s perennial evasiveness about his post-processing, etc). Second, he doesn’t own up to it in subsequent episodes after listeners... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

283 - Henri Kisielewski
Q: How do you approach the editing process and deciding what to keep in a project?
Editing is a masterclass in itself. I learned from mentors that you may have a lot of good images, but you must decide which ones tell a coherent story and fit the project's concept. I tortured myself with the same track and spent months refining the sequence to achieve the mood and tempo the project requires.
283 - Henri Kisielewski
Q: What sparked your interest in turning a local experience into a larger, global project like Agloe?
Hearing about Agloe on a podcast and recognizing a chance to expand a thread from Non Fiction into something that blends documentary practice with fictional framing. It became a way to explore how maps, place, and narrative shape perception and truth in America.
283 - Henri Kisielewski
Q: How did you come to assist Olivia Arthur and begin your journey as a photographer?
I reached out after I realized I wanted to be a photographer. I offered concrete help to Olivia—improving her newsletter, her exhibitions, and social media—and I started by assisting, which opened doors and taught me about work ethic and how to present work. It was about offering tangible value and being willing to learn from her process.
281 - Ilvy Njiokiktjien
Q: What is your dream for future projects?
A worldwide-published contemporary issue story co-created with a journalist, ideally centered on women or gender and linked to family themes.
281 - Ilvy Njiokiktjien
Q: What motivates your shift toward climate-focused migration storytelling?
She wants to document areas predicted to receive migrants in coming decades, using a mix of landscapes and people to archive the current moment for future viewers.
