Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

867: Examining How Fungi and Soil Microbes Drive Ecosystem Recovery After Wildfires - Dr. Sydney Glassman
Q: Is there a piece of advice that somebody gave you at some point in your career that really helped that you can pass on to our listeners today?
The idea of making lemonade out of lemons and embracing the concept of falling up—turning failures into learning opportunities, persisting through setbacks, and using adversity to propel progress rather than derail it.
867: Examining How Fungi and Soil Microbes Drive Ecosystem Recovery After Wildfires - Dr. Sydney Glassman
Q: So do you have an example of a big challenge that you faced or a major failure that you had?
We faced extensive troubleshooting of pyrocosms for reliable temperature profiles, dealing with questions like whether to bury the setups, how charcoal amounts interacted with different soils, and how to manage weather, air quality, and even the COVID shutdown; ultimately, differences in soil types required adjusting fire intensity to achieve comparable conditions.
866: Astrochemist Studying the Elements of Planet and Star Formation - Dr. Ted Bergin
Q: What was one of your favorite discoveries or successes in your research?
Using hydrogen deuteride detected in a planet-forming disk to measure mass and abundances, enabling a more robust understanding of the chemistry in early planetary systems.
866: Astrochemist Studying the Elements of Planet and Star Formation - Dr. Ted Bergin
Q: Can you tell us how you describe your work to someone not familiar with astronomy?
I frame it as understanding how life could arise by tracing how water, carbon, nitrogen and other essential materials form and are distributed in planetary systems, combining chemistry, physics, and astronomy to study planet formation.
866: Astrochemist Studying the Elements of Planet and Star Formation - Dr. Ted Bergin
Q: So can you start by telling us what you like to do when you're not doing science?
I enjoy time with my family, exploring hobbies like learning guitar, and pursuing a balanced life outside the lab to stay present and motivated.
