Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Profiles in Pediatric Sports Medicine: David Bernhardt, MD
Q: Where do you think we still have room to improve in PPE and its integration into everyday practice?
He discusses balancing thorough PPE questionnaires with practical clinical workflow, prioritizing core safety questions (like cardiac and mental health) and integrating them into shorter forms when possible to avoid overburdening patients and clinicians.
Profiles in Pediatric Sports Medicine: David Bernhardt, MD
Q: So I think we'll just kind of get going and just talk about your career in sports medicine. What influenced you to start your career in medicine?
David describes a path inspired by mentorship and a family legacy, discovering sports medicine as a new field, and ultimately choosing pediatrics and primary care sports medicine while finding his dream role at UW as a team physician.
The New Olympic Policy on Protection of the Female — Discussing Differences in Sex Differentiation (DSD)
Q: Dave, can you talk a little bit about medical conditions that fall into this category of differences of sex differentiation?
Dr. Allen outlines the basics of sexual differentiation, then describes how conditions like DSDs involve alterations along the developmental pathway that can affect sex characteristics and hormone responses, leading to a spectrum rather than a single category.
Revisionist Sports Medicine: Turf Toe
Q: What are the key imaging steps for suspected turf toe?
Start with weight-bearing plain radiographs, add a sesamoid view if fracture is suspected, and use bilateral weight-bearing NEP to assess sesamoid retraction; live fluoro and stress imaging can provide additional information.
Revisionist Sports Medicine: Turf Toe
Q: When you have this patient come in, what's kind of going through your mind? What's your preconceived differential?
I consider sesamoiditis, missed fracture,AVN of a sesamoid, and various cartilage injuries; traumatic bunions can also mimic turf toe, so the differential is broad and hinges on history and exam.
