  • Stop interrupting Roman

Great person to interview. Remarkable knowledge and candid sharing by Roman but the presenter kept talking over him and interrupting him. Let the guest speak and wait till they finish. It was stressful to listen to.

  • Great guests and information

Such a great podcast to hear from players and coaches and get the answers you’re most curious about. Plus they have one of the best Twitter accounts for junior/college tennis.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dave Schilling - Denison Head Coach
Q: What happens when a recruit is not yet at the level you want but grows into it over time?
We identify driven athletes early, maintain contact, and invite them to campus to observe and develop; the key is persistence and a clear plan that allows the athlete to grow into the role.
Dave Schilling - Denison Head Coach
Q: How do you balance academics and tennis at Denison, and what role do international players play on your roster?
Academics come first with tennis as a close second; Denison does not offer athletic scholarships at D3, so merit-based aid can be a compelling factor. International players add diversity, maturity, and unique perspectives, typically forming about a third of the roster.
Dave Schilling - Denison Head Coach
Q: What is your recruiting pitch and why is the approach to recruiting in Division III so variable?
Recruiting happens daily and reflects the coach's personality and the school's philosophy; the goal is to align players who are passionate, high-motor, and have grit, rather than simply chasing name-brand prestige.
Dave Schilling - Denison Head Coach
Q: Tell me the UTR range of your starting six, and how does that reflect the level of the Denison team?
The six players range from 11-2 to 12-2 UTR, with the top player at 12-2, illustrating a high level that places Denison among the top teams in the country.
Cooper Williams, Duke Men's Tennis - Episode 112
Q: How has your junior ITF background helped you manage professional travel and competition solo.
Juniors taught me to travel week to week, stay disciplined with nutrition and recovery, arrange practice time and courts, and rely on a support system (mom and Duke coaches) while building independence on tour.
