  • Sugarless gels

Hi Paula and Tomo - Great podcast, I listen to it all the time on my runs! Regarding the listener who was for advice on sugarless nutrition for marathons, there is a brand of gel quite popular now called UCAN that does not contain sugar. Its whole premise is that it uses a slow release super starch that fuels you for longer without the blood sugar spikes that accompanies traditional gels. Elite athletes like Dakotah Popehn, Sara Hall, and Meb Keflezighi use it. You should check it out! Happy run... more

  • Fabulous running podcast!

Solid five stars running podcast, full of brilliant tips and camaraderie. (Please get rid / significantly reduce the volume of the TradeCentreUK adverts: so loud and piercing - so unnecessary - and has made me want to avoid TCUK at all costs).

Thank you so much, Paula and Thommo. It is a privilege to tune into your show! X

  • Way too many ads

I was really excited to find this podcast, but gave up after 14 minutes when I got tired of listening to ads. Will try again in a few months to see if they change the format.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Paula’s Run Club: The Shakeout Episode 48.
Q: Is it okay to split some runs into two during peak training weeks?
Yes, splitting long runs into two sessions can help with volume while maintaining quality, provided hydration and fueling are managed between runs and overall weekly load remains sensible.
Jo & Gav Pavey: Still Running in our 40's
Q: How did the backpacking years influence your training and mindset for returning to competition?
The backpacking period provided travel, life experiences, and low-pressure training that eventually allowed them to rebuild Jo's base training with a focused, sustainable approach and come back stronger later.
Jo & Gav Pavey: Still Running in our 40's
Q: What kept you coming back to club-running despite early injuries and setbacks?
Jo explains that a mix of love for running, support from coaches, and the team environment kept her going, complemented by careful training adjustments and resilience built over time.
The Shakeout with Paula Radcliffe and Thommo, running tips & still feeling the London marathon glow!
Q: What should Adam consider about stop-start moments in long runs and races?
We discussed building in deliberate short stops during long runs to rehearse the restart, focusing on quicker reactivation of firing patterns and using a walk-run approach to ease back into a jog.
Paula's Run Club: The Shakeout Ep.37
Q: What is the best approach for evening marathons in terms of meal timing and pacing strategy?
For evening races, keep the meal timing similar to a regular race breakfast, with a light, easily digestible pre-race nutrition two to four hours before, and pace by effort rather than strict target pace, adjusting for hill and course demands.
