  • Sugarless gels

Hi Paula and Tomo - Great podcast, I listen to it all the time on my runs! Regarding the listener who was for advice on sugarless nutrition for marathons, there is a brand of gel quite popular now called UCAN that does not contain sugar. Its whole premise is that it uses a slow release super starch that fuels you for longer without the blood sugar spikes that accompanies traditional gels. Elite athletes like Dakotah Popehn, Sara Hall, and Meb Keflezighi use it. You should check it out! Happy run... more

  • Fabulous running podcast!

Solid five stars running podcast, full of brilliant tips and camaraderie. (Please get rid / significantly reduce the volume of the TradeCentreUK adverts: so loud and piercing - so unnecessary - and has made me want to avoid TCUK at all costs).

Thank you so much, Paula and Thommo. It is a privilege to tune into your show! X

  • Way too many ads

I was really excited to find this podcast, but gave up after 14 minutes when I got tired of listening to ads. Will try again in a few months to see if they change the format.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Shakeout with Paula Radcliffe and Thommo, running tips & still feeling the London marathon glow!
Q: What should Adam consider about stop-start moments in long runs and races?
We discussed building in deliberate short stops during long runs to rehearse the restart, focusing on quicker reactivation of firing patterns and using a walk-run approach to ease back into a jog.
Paula's Run Club: The Shakeout Ep.37
Q: What is the best approach for evening marathons in terms of meal timing and pacing strategy?
For evening races, keep the meal timing similar to a regular race breakfast, with a light, easily digestible pre-race nutrition two to four hours before, and pace by effort rather than strict target pace, adjusting for hill and course demands.
BONUS POD - Paula's Run Club Live @ the Apple Brompton Road Store - London Marathon 2026
Q: Any tips for running London virtually or with a personal support crew to emulate the atmosphere?
Enlist family and friends to follow along, plan a cheering route, and create a strong playlist; if running solo, bring the crowd energy with you and maintain connection to fans through route planning.
BONUS POD - Paula's Run Club Live @ the Apple Brompton Road Store - London Marathon 2026
Q: What pacing strategy or mental approach do you recommend when starting a marathon to avoid going out too fast?
A common approach is to start conservatively, use training metrics (heart rate, pace) as guides, and aim for negative splits to finish strong while keeping halfway in perspective.
BONUS POD - Paula's Run Club Live @ the Apple Brompton Road Store - London Marathon 2026
Q: During a marathon, how do you stop your mind from focusing on how far you still have to go?
The hosts discuss breaking the course into sections (e.g., 5K chunks or miles) to make the distance feel more manageable, and using landmarks as psychological milestones to stay focused and motivated.
