  • Paula is unreal

You forget what Paula has achieved and how great she was. She really relates to all runners and makes this podcast brilliant. The guy tends to go off on a tangent and waffle quite a lot but overall one of the best podcasts around

  • Sugarless gels

Hi Paula and Tomo - Great podcast, I listen to it all the time on my runs! Regarding the listener who was for advice on sugarless nutrition for marathons, there is a brand of gel quite popular now called UCAN that does not contain sugar. Its whole premise is that it uses a slow release super starch that fuels you for longer without the blood sugar spikes that accompanies traditional gels. Elite athletes like Dakotah Popehn, Sara Hall, and Meb Keflezighi use it. You should check it out! Happy run... more

  • Fabulous running podcast!

Solid five stars running podcast, full of brilliant tips and camaraderie. (Please get rid / significantly reduce the volume of the TradeCentreUK adverts: so loud and piercing - so unnecessary - and has made me want to avoid TCUK at all costs).

Thank you so much, Paula and Thommo. It is a privilege to tune into your show! X

  • Way too many ads

I was really excited to find this podcast, but gave up after 14 minutes when I got tired of listening to ads. Will try again in a few months to see if they change the format.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Operation Jog On
Q: Could you tell us a little more about the Jog On initiative and how it works in practice?
Liz Warner explains that Jog On combines public engagement and education with an enforcement element, having trained female runners in plain clothes running in key areas to deter harassment. If anything happens, a marked police vehicle is nearby to intervene, and the aim is proportional responses rather than criminalising everyday behavior.
Paula's Run Club brings you The Shakeout
Q: Would a 5K or 10K be better as a build-up race for a half marathon, given a busy schedule?
A 10K is generally more beneficial for speed endurance and training adaptation prior to a half, especially when schedules are tight. It helps improve pace and stamina more effectively than a straightforward 5K time trial.
Paula's Run Club brings you The Shakeout
Q: How would you recommend choosing a new workout, half marathon training and race shoe when looking for a bit of extra speed?
Start with testing shoes in a specialist shop, use treadmill trials if possible, and gradually introduce carbon shoes to find comfort. For training, balance speed work with longer endurance sessions, and consider a 10K race as a preparatory step to maximize training gains before a half marathon.
Running a Mile with World Record holder Josh Kerr
Q: How do you manage pressure and turn it into a performance advantage?
He emphasizes embracing pressure as a motivator, setting clear personal standards, and relying on a consistent routine and preparation to stay composed when the moment arrives.
Running a Mile with World Record holder Josh Kerr
Q: What went through your mind during the World Record attempt in London?
He focused on staying calm, following a planned segmentation, and executing his pace without panicking, trusting his training and the support system around him.
