Inside Global Hoops: Shocking China Coaching Stories, NIL Disruption & Why Mongolia Could Be Basketball’s Next Power
Q: NIL has changed the landscape for the Next Stars program; how has NIL impacted attracting American talent to Australia and the broader region?
NIL has dramatically shifted the talent pipeline. Locally talented players are increasingly drawn to opportunities in the U.S. to maximize NIL potential, reducing the pool of Americans coming to Australia, while European players are also chasing the same money. This has forced teams to rethink development paths, and some players now view college basketball in the U.S. as the main route to financial and career security.
Inside Global Hoops: Shocking China Coaching Stories, NIL Disruption & Why Mongolia Could Be Basketball’s Next Power
Q: Coach, keeping it simple, going from the Chinese women's national team, Shantel, Bay Area Dragons, Australia, how does your approach change and is it always the same everywhere you've been, given the circumstances that you've coached in?
The approach has to be adaptable: defense-first, quick transition, and spreading the floor, but you must adjust to the players' strengths and the level of competition. In China, the emphasis was on organizing offense; elsewhere, I focused more on defensive principles and how to implement a faster pace and three-point shooting, while always keeping things simple and clearly defined.
