Ottoman Lives

The Ottoman Empire lasted for six hundred years and dominated the Middle East and Europe, from Budapest to Baghdad and everything in between. The sultans ruled three continents. But they didn't do it on their own. This podcast looks at the cast of characters who made the empire run: the sultan, the queen mother, the peasant, the janissary, the harem eunuch, the holy man, and the outlaw.

  • This series does a service to dilettantes of Ottoman history who have always wanted to learn more, but did not know where to begin. I recommend this podcast to newcomers who may have some grounding in Islamic or European history, but neither is by any means a requirement.

  • Excellent content, sometimes problematic production value

This podcast is an amazing source of knowledge, and the host presents complicated issues in an engaging and productive way. At times, the production value is low (e.g. the episodes are not clearly presented as a sequence, some episodes have technical issues towards the end). Despite this, I highly recommend this podcast to anyone interested in a nuanced presentation of a fascinating empire!
