    Purveyors of “secret knowledge” have been around for millennia, of course. If the awful Dan Brown novels did anything for the general, popular readership, it was at least to “reveal” the nonsensical (cherry-picked, non contextual) nature of of the enthusiastic dilettante purveyors of such anecdotes.
