  • Entertaining, informative, but not stuffy

Opera is a wonderful, sometimes amazing art form. But learning about it can sometimes seem like doing homework.

Not with this podcast though. This is great for learning about Opera in general, and for learning about Opera current events. The people involved are knowledgeable, but don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s informative, but also fun.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Period Performance Pelléas! ft. Opera Atelier
Q: How do you select and prepare your singers for these physically demanding roles?
We audition for not just vocal quality but the ability to move, listen, and interact with colleagues; the text must come alive in performance, and singers must be willing to take artistic risks and collaborate deeply with others.
Period Performance Pelléas! ft. Opera Atelier
Q: Why did you decide to adapt Pelléas and Melisande with a Baroque sensibility and a reduced orchestration?
The choice was driven by a belief that Debussy's music, reimagined through Opera Atelier's sensibility, can be understood more clearly in a reduced frame that suits the hall and the singers, while preserving the text-driven, dreamlike atmosphere of the piece.
Period Performance Pelléas! ft. Opera Atelier
Q: Can you give us the elevator pitch for Opera Atelier?
Opera Atelier is a dance-forward, historically informed company that blends Baroque and pre-ballet performance with intense, expressive acting and movement, expanding into later repertoire while maintaining a strong emphasis on visual storytelling and period-informed production.
Marty Mediocre! ft. Susanne Burgess
Q: So how are you feeling going into this really big assignment?
Burgess describes approaching Hoffmann's four heroines by preserving her own voice while exploring the distinct vocal identities required, embracing the challenge of precision, range, and the physical demands of the roles.
The Diva Dance! ft. Christopher Tin
Q: Can you tell us about how that all went down?
It involved collaboration with Yuma's team to adapt Puccini's music for a figure skating routine.
