On June 16, 1971, a radical group of Pasifika and Māori men and women confronted state-sanctioned racism to form the Polynesian Panther Party. Like their seafaring ancestors before them, the Polynesian Panthers guided their people to a new horizon – but instead of stormy seas, they navigated a red-blooded nation raging with rugby, racism and beer. Made with funding from NZ On Air.

Amazing, informative podcast
Everyone should listen

An incredible account of early difficult racist experiences of Pasifika in NZ and the rise of the Polynesian Panthers a brave group of young PIs that fought for positive change for our people. Fa’amalo fa’afetai tele lava
A powerful and moving tribute to unsung hero’s who stood up for the oppressed and most vulnerable. We salute you.
Really eye opening. A really well done podcast that enlightens to a dark part of NZ’s history
I almost never write reviews, but Once A Panther feels too important not to.
All New Zealanders need to hear these stories so we can begin to acknowledge the reality of our very recent past, & our present.
This pod cast was so inspirational! Myself being a 20 year old Samoan think it’s so important that Māori & Pacific Islanders educated themselves about the Polynesian Panthers. What they stood up for and how they were treaded etc. This pod cast has educated me and I’m glad. This is definitely a must listen!
Important history for the Pasifika youth in NZ to learn the struggles of those who came before. Much respect to the Panthers for all they achieved and continue to achieve.
I am humbled by the experiences and mahi of the Polynesian Panthers. Aotearoa is a better country today thanks to them. Thank you.
This is a wonderfully brilliant podcast series. So important too to listen to the stories of Polynesian Kiwis and their fight to be recognised as Kiwis. For anyone keen on social justice in Aotearoa NZ this is a must listen.
I am in awe at how resilient and strong both the Maori and Pasifika community is. Definitely a great podcast!! So articulate and well recorded! Good job
Educate to Liberate! Thank you for paving the way for us young Pasifika/Oceanic/Moana peoples. 🤎🤎
