This is what I LOVE about a decent music podcast. Stu’s question format is perfect…just enough guidance, encouraging the artist to speak freely, relax into conversation, then the listener ends up getting a good feel for the human behind the music.
Each episode will leave you with a whole stack of new music to go on the hunt for. Highlight eps include Ed Harcourt, Pixies, The Hold Steady / Craig Finn.
This is a very important podcast if you like music without prejudice, hear the influences behind some of your favourite artists, hear music that you may not ever know exists, this maybe, musically, the most important podcast that has been created, given the fact we are fed disposable music, break from conditioning and hear what music means rather than how it sounds
Very guest brings something completely different and it’s really cool to hear the stories and life events attached to the songs. It often reminds me of albums or songs that I love but have forgotten about and most episodes send me down a music related rabbit hole. Highly recommend for music fans!
Wonderful song-oriented discussions that yield reflections on so much more. I began with the fascinating Barry Adamson interview and greatly look forward to delving into other episodes.
I know Stu (not personally) from the Distraction Pieces and saw Fran Healy posting about it. First time listening to it and really enjoyed it. I listen to a lot of podcasts and what you find is the host talks more that the guest and it becomes off putting! This is not the case and Stu let the conversation flow. Off to search the back catalogue now!

The show centers on candid conversations with musicians and creators, each sharing seven tracks that soundtracked their creative journey. Episodes blend personal history, club culture, songwriting craft, and industry realities, with guests spanning indie to pop icons and contemporary indie artists. The format tends to spark nostalgia while revealing practical insights about making music, touring, and staying creatively true, making it a strong fit for listeners who crave human stories behind the songs and fresh music to discover.
What sticks out is the intimate, question-led approach that lets guests guide the narrative, the emphasis on lifelong influences, and the way conversations weave between artistry and the music industry. The mix of ... more
