Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Myth of "Normal": A Neurodivergent Mom Championing Neurodivergent Kids
Q: Who is your book for?
It is for all parents of neurodivergent children.
A Remarkable Life on a Fault Line
Q: Did you have to go through a lot of recall or self-hypnosis to retrieve memories from early childhood?
Therapy helped unlock memories that had been buried; some recall was spotty, and the process involved revisiting uncomfortable memories, but it was necessary to tell a truthful, coherent story and to understand how those events shaped me.
A Remarkable Life on a Fault Line
Q: The reviewers call your book brutally honest. How honest did you intend to be when you started writing?
I intended to tell the truth as I experienced it, without censoring my memories or softening the edges to please readers, because honesty is what makes the memoir meaningful and useful to others going through similar pain.
Anne Frank: The Writer Behind the Icon
Q: How would you assess, given the fact she was a teenager, we'll take that into the context, but how would you assess the quality of her writing?
Ruth Franklin responds that, despite her youth, Anne Frank showed a precocious literary sensibility and a willingness to experiment with form, noting that the earliest writings differ from the polished diary most readers know, and that Franklin's book argues for recognizing Anne as a serious writer with a distinctive voice.
When the Doctor Needed Her Own Advice
Q: What was there in your own life that may have helped inspire you to write this book?
Dr. Larkin explains that her experiences as a physician caring for patients through aging, coupled with her own aging journey, inspired her to write Timeless Vision and to develop a message about empowerment in later life.
