  • Stop the Whining

This could be such a great podcast if it weren’t for the rampant racism whining about the Trump Administration. Good gravy I get the administration is not perfect, but every freaking podcast is nothing about the parks, but how bad things are for them. Funny, because we’ve been to several in 2025 and they have never looked or been better! Maybe this podcast should be about how great our parks are regardless of who is in office.

  • Great coverage of current events!

I’ve always appreciated the podcast’s coverage of corners of the National Park Service that I might otherwise miss. But recently it has also become a fantastic source of information about how action on the federal level is affecting the NPS. The guests provide plain spoken, direct information and give you a great sense for what is happening. No euphemisms, no sugar coating. I’ve really appreciated the coverage, thank you.

  • My favorite subject

I really enjoy the work done here. Nice to have a source that doesn’t just cover the popular parks. I’ve learned a lot about how things work behind the scenes. I’ve enjoyed the many interviews with naturalists, rangers and park managers too.

Q: Why do you think there is a disconnect between public support for parks and political action in Congress?
Public polling shows broad support for public lands, yet policy remains gridlocked due to factors like corporate funding, the structure of representation in the Senate, and political incentives that make lawmakers hesitant to act on park stewardship.
National Parks Traveler Podcast | ESA's Future
Q: What recent developments give you cause for optimism in endangered species recovery?
He points to a dedicated $50 million for on-the-ground recovery funded by the Inflation Reduction Act and ongoing efforts to deploy those funds effectively, as well as successful examples where incentives and targeted management can lead to recovery progress.
National Parks Traveler Podcast | ESA's Future
Q: How do you see the role of federal agencies evolving amid staff losses and reorganizations?
Li argues that a leaner U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot carry all responsibilities alone and that other agencies, especially the Forest Service and BLM, must be engaged in applied research and management. He warns about disruption from reorganizations and predicts increased departures unless Congress asserts its authority.
National Parks Traveler Podcast | ESA's Future
Q: What are your main concerns with the Westerman Bill and what reforms would you propose?
Li describes a small set of common-ground ideas, including giving landowners more regulatory flexibility as species recover, and offering a portfolio of incentives (less regulation plus financial or technical support) to encourage conservation while recognizing different landowners' needs. He emphasizes piloting recovery milestones and leveraging existing authority to avoid broad new legislation.
