I love “Dirt in My Shoes” and have used their suggestions many times and they are spot on! Getting ready to use my first itinerary for Acadia and looking forward to it! You mentioned supporting nonprofit s that support the parks… do you have ones you recommend? We live in Washington state…but we love all the parks! Thanks!

  • Excellent

One of my favorite podcasts for sure. The hosts are so knowledgeable. However, John needs to stop saying “right” so much when he responds to Ash’s comments. It’s getting old.

  • Best National Park info

Ash and John are fantastic and treat us to a fun way of learning all about the things to do and see in our great National Parks. They provide in-depth info for the best hikes and scenic drives. My favorite episodes are the ones where John plays a game with Ash in which she has to catch certain things he says (I.e. names of Beach Boys songs). He stumps me sometimes. :)

  • Insufferable

Title says it all. Hosts are neither entertaining nor interesting. Huge opportunity to do good work talking about national parks wasted by feeble attempts to be a lifestyle brand.

Secret hikes are often favorite hidden gems like Hanging Canyon to Lake of the Crags in Grand Teton. Exploring the trails less traveled will yield quiet, beautiful spots.
134: Q&A - Recreation.gov Loophole, Hidden Gems, Alaska Parks, and Utah's Mighty Five
Q: Is it smart to visit the North and South Dakota parks in the same trip?
It's definitely feasible. North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National Park is not far from South Dakota's parks, making it easy to visit both in one trip.
134: Q&A - Recreation.gov Loophole, Hidden Gems, Alaska Parks, and Utah's Mighty Five
Q: If you wanted to have a reservation for September 1st, instead of trying to call on March 1st with everybody else, could you call on February 16th and book up to 14 days to include September 1st or do you have to wait until the entire booking is available when you call?
You don't have to wait for all of your dates to open up. As long as the first date of your trip is open for reservations, you can reserve up to 14 days starting from that date.
134: Q&A - Recreation.gov Loophole, Hidden Gems, Alaska Parks, and Utah's Mighty Five
Q: I would really love to know which are the parks that are really worthy camping inside of the park and the ones that it's not really necessary.
Some parks, like Grand Teton, can be better camped outside because of high costs and better dispersed camping options. Other parks might necessitate camping inside for better access and fewer crowds.
113: Exploring Crater Lake National Park: Best Tips + Activities
Q: What are some of the best times to visit Crater Lake National Park?
Mid-July is about the earliest you should go if you want to enjoy the full experience, including boat tours.
