  • Monocle registers in my mind as a fancy jetsetting travel magazine (geeze, do we have a surprise half-theme going here?!) - just look at one of their covers and tell me you don’t absent-mindedly slip into a voyeuristic stupor! It’s a magazine that wants to be a book but also wants to have pictures, and that kind of split personality really speaks to me. I haven’t been to a very exciting new place in a very long time, and this show makes me long to travel while also simultaneously scratching that... more

  • Why include audio of George Floyd dying?

I wish there was a content warning, and truly just not played at all, for the audio of George Floyd dying. There needs to be more care in sharing this kind of audio footage, as it is traumatizing for black people. It’s easy for non black people to separate themselves from the deaths of black people by easily sharing this kind of violent content.

Arup at 80: Design for what’s next

A bridge designer’s guide to connecting communities
Q: What else about these bridges helps people experience the city differently?
Beyond function, bridges can slow cyclists, reveal structural details as you move, create places to meet, and even become a spectacle when they open or hinge to allow boats to pass, transforming a crossing into a civic event.
A bridge designer’s guide to connecting communities
Q: Is this a typical approach where architecture and engineering collaborate from day one rather than one dressing up the other?
Yes, the collaboration from day one is essential to ensure the bridge is not only structurally sound but also contextual, aesthetically engaging, and fully integrated into how people will move through and use the space.
A bridge designer’s guide to connecting communities
Q: Tell us, what was the significance of the bridge there and what was your ambitions?
The first bridge linked a new shopping district to a nature reserve and onward to a broader cycle network, while the second bridge aimed to create a lingerable, identifiable destination that encouraged social interaction and urban life around the canal.
