  • Great show, corny music countdown

I love this show — a unique survey across many topics, just like Monocle. As much as I also love Fernando Augusto Pacheco, the global countdown features some of the corniest, least interesting music on earth. It can be fun and interesting occasionally but most of the time it’s full of poorly recycled pop (of late it’s been local takes on the “reggaeton beat + robot vocal” thing that every country now has their own version of). Can we do better on the music, guys?

  • What BBC radio 4 should be

Monocle entertains, educates and provides inspiration in a Reithian mix of content. Something that Lord Reith’s own BBC now fails to do.

  • Disappointed

I have adored Monocle for years, however I have found its neutral, almost pro-Zionist coverage of the genocide in Gaza incredibly disappointing. I listen to The Briefing every morning and feel frustrated most days. I thought Monocle stood for more and wanted to see the world a better place.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Spain vows to overhaul immigration laws as the Ceuta crisis persists
Q: What is the current situation in Ceuta and how is Spain handling it?
The situation remains unresolved with migrants on the ground; Spain has begun centralizing command and is facing criticism for the delay, while Morocco's role is scrutinized and the EU's response is debated, including potential Schengen implications.
Myanmar’s post-coup leadership’s diplomacy tour lands in Bangkok – what does legitimacy look like?
Q: How does Thailand position itself in relation to Myanmar, and what are the wider regional implications?
Thailand is taking a leading, proactive role due to its border with Myanmar and its interest in stabilizing the region, which could influence ASEAN messaging and regional security policies.
Myanmar’s post-coup leadership’s diplomacy tour lands in Bangkok – what does legitimacy look like?
Q: What seems to be the core goal of Myanmar's diplomatic tour in Bangkok and beyond?
The core goal appears to be regaining international legitimacy and re-engaging with the global community, leveraging high-level meetings and a calibrated diplomacy to present a more constructive image despite the ongoing internal conflict.
This land is my land: how should countries resolve small territorial disputes?
Q: What is the brief backstory here?
Jenny Mathers explains that the Kuril Islands dispute has historical roots dating back to the 19th century, with renewed contention after World War II when the Soviet Union seized the islands, and that the current standoff is tied to Russia's broader assertiveness in the Far East.
Can Ukraine’s new defence minister Yevhenii Khmara deliver what Kyiv needs most?
Q: Is there any realistic way to hold elections while martial law is in place in Ukraine?
The guest explains that there is no political party in parliament currently calling for elections under martial law, and the process is complicated by security concerns, the military's role, and the international context; the focus should be on security and war effort first, with elections possible only when conditions allow.
