  • What BBC radio 4 should be

Monocle entertains, educates and provides inspiration in a Reithian mix of content. Something that Lord Reith’s own BBC now fails to do.

  • Disappointed

I have adored Monocle for years, however I have found its neutral, almost pro-Zionist coverage of the genocide in Gaza incredibly disappointing. I listen to The Briefing every morning and feel frustrated most days. I thought Monocle stood for more and wanted to see the world a better place.

  • Outstayed Welcome

I was fine with the pithy elitism of this show until it became interspersed with pro-Israeli propaganda regularly. I now find it abhorrent.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can Marco Rubio smooth things over with Pope Leo XIV and Giorgia Meloni?
Q: Juliette, what do both sides want out of these talks?
Juliette explains that Rubio's goal is to mend bridges and restore a semblance of normalcy in Vatican–US relations, while the Vatican seeks dialogue and to avoid alienating American Catholics who influence midterm outcomes.
Is the ceasefire in Lebanon all but over?
Q: What is the on-the-ground reality of the Lebanon ceasefire right now?
The correspondent describes ongoing Israeli strikes, rocket and drone activity from Hezbollah, and extensive destruction along the Yellow Line, making the ceasefire seem more like a fragile armistice than a stable peace.
Trump’s global 10 per cent tariffs ruled illegal as he pushes for an EU-trade deal
Q: How significant is the Court ruling in limiting the tariffs, and what does it mean for the broader Trade Court's authority?
The ruling is relatively narrow, focusing on the specific 10% tariffs with immediate relief for only a few entities, which means broader tariffs may still be contested but are currently unsettled and subject to further appeals.
Trump in the polls: the domestic impact of US foreign policy
Q: First of all, what do the polling numbers say about Trump's domestic standing?
Polls show historically low approval, but the possibility that these numbers do not fully capture political dynamics, as Trump has still managed to win elections in the past.
Planes, trains and ferries: How the Iran war is affecting travel
Q: What factors are driving the shift toward ferries as a travel option this summer?
Christophe Mathieu explains that hedging fuel costs and a perception of more predictable travel experience are nudging travelers toward ferries, along with increasing summer demand that ferries can accommodate with existing fleet capacity.
