  • What BBC radio 4 should be

Monocle entertains, educates and provides inspiration in a Reithian mix of content. Something that Lord Reith’s own BBC now fails to do.

  • Disappointed

I have adored Monocle for years, however I have found its neutral, almost pro-Zionist coverage of the genocide in Gaza incredibly disappointing. I listen to The Briefing every morning and feel frustrated most days. I thought Monocle stood for more and wanted to see the world a better place.

  • Outstayed Welcome

I was fine with the pithy elitism of this show until it became interspersed with pro-Israeli propaganda regularly. I now find it abhorrent.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Israel’s offensive against Lebanon intensifies
Q: Layla, this push to defeat Hezbollah comes as part of a broader ceasefire strategy—is there a link between these US and Iranian actions and the Lebanon situation?
Yes, there appears to be a linked dynamic where US airstrikes in Iran and ongoing Iranian-US discussions influence the Lebanon conflict, though Netanyahu frames Lebanon as fighting Hezbollah, not the Lebanese state, complicating ceasefire prospects.
Israel’s offensive against Lebanon intensifies
Q: Leila, what's the very latest on the ground?
Leila Malala-Alan reports that over 100 Hezbollah targets were hit across southern Lebanon and Beq al-Value, with at least 31 killed and dozens more injured, as civilians flee and the ceasefire appears fragile.
Will Donald Trump’s Republican party purges cost him in the midterms?
Q: Could these moves make it harder for Trump to govern if incumbents or allies are forced out or oppose him in Congress?
The concern is that firing or sidelining Republican senators who oppose him could lead to a more defiant, less cohesive Senate, making governance and passing legislation more challenging for Trump.
Will Donald Trump’s Republican party purges cost him in the midterms?
Q: Is there something different this time around in terms of loyalty and enforcement against dissent within the GOP?
Yes, there is a more aggressive approach that not only punishes dissent but actively endorses and funds anti-incumbent or critical candidates, signaling a more methodical reshaping of the party's executive-aligned base.
Nato under strain as members seek clarity on US plans to withdraw troops
Q: Amrit Ramkumar, what does the backlash against AI in the United States mean for policy and business in the near term?
Ramkumar explains that backlash is pressuring policymakers to reassess data centers and AI deployment, with poll numbers shifting and some proposals for stricter safeguards gaining momentum, while the White House recalibrates its approach.
