  • Mediocre

More interested in telling a sensationalized story than actually telling the story of conservation. Do the “journalists” like Ashoka even talk to conservationists? Or just to the western academics who moan about the militarisation of conservation without ever having spent a day in the field?

I really appreciate this podcast. Though I’ve worked in the environmental field for over a decade, this show consistently exposes me to new ideas, issues, thinkers and writers. I appreciate the truly global perspective, and that the hosts don’t shy away from challenging or controversial issues. I also love the “stop the tape” fact checks. As an elder millennial, I’ll admit this is delightfully nostalgic, but as a scientist, this gives me more confidence that the content is being thoughtfully vet... more

  • Rewilding the World One Acre at a Time

Oh my gosh! This podcast in general and this show in particular give me such hope for the world and humanity in these very troubled times. Knowing so many people are working so hard to make the world a better place makes me cry. This is so much better for my mental health than reading the news. I promise to become a subscriber!

  • Incredible journalism

Top quality reporting on the biggest environmental issues. I’m a regular listener. This podcast expands my thinking and is inspirational to my work as a conservationist and as a songwriter. Mongabay covers critical environmental issues that mainstream media tends to ignore.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The coyotes next door: What we get wrong about America's 'song dog'
Q: What are some of the biggest misconceptions about coyotes that you want to dispel?
Misconceptions often center on coyotes being inherently aggressive toward humans; in reality, they generally avoid people, with most conflicts arising from feeding and pet interactions, and their behavior is more canine-like than vilified in media.
The 'lonely conservationist' advocating for better care of workers
Q: What practical advice would you give to organizations looking to support their staff and volunteers over the long term?
Prioritize care as part of long-term strategy, implement workshops and resources for wellbeing, foster collaboration over competition among NGOs, and recognize that sustainable conservation requires healthy people rather than just successful projects.
The 'lonely conservationist' advocating for better care of workers
Q: What are the main challenges you see today that didn't exist years ago, and how has the field changed to address well-being and care for conservation workers?
The field has gradually become more people-centric with more social science engagement, but persistent issues include precarious employment, wage gaps, lack of HR support in small NGOs, and systemic exploitation that makes sustainable careers hard to maintain.
The 'lonely conservationist' advocating for better care of workers
Q: How did The Lonely Conservationists evolve from a blog to a broader movement, and what prompted you to share your story?
Sharing her story opened space for hundreds of others to submit theirs, revealing a large, shared struggle and creating an avenue for conversation, resources, and research in capacity building and worker well-being.
Save a tiger, save an ecosystem: Why protecting the big cats is a biodiversity boon
Q: What differentiates GTRP 2.0 from the original plan, and what safeguards are in place to ensure meaningful progress?
GTRP 2.0 introduces an indicator framework and a collective, stock-taking process to verify outcomes, ensuring that stakeholders can challenge claims and that progress is measured against shared benchmarks rather than individual governments' self-assessments.
