  • Really negative attitude. Policy critics needed, but pathways to solutions are missing in this podcast narrative.

One of the flagship topics in the podcast, wealth hoarding by elders, was recently debunked in the Globe and Mail. Time to revisit that topic.

  • Informative and unbiased

Great conversations on the housing crisis supported by facts and data, presented in a way that somehow makes me feel hopeful that things can get better. I wish we could make all NIMBYs listen to this.

  • Generally great information, sometimes inaccurate with details

Missing Middle is a great Podcast, providing insight into today’s Canadian Housing Market from the Missing Middle point of view. However, the most recent Podcast inaccurately described the downpayment for home under 1M as 50,000 (5%), it is in actuality 5% on the first 500,000$ then 10% on the next 499,999$ which would be 75,000$ minimum downpayment. Also, when comparing monthly mortgage fees of today to that of the past (70s-90s) it would be best to account for inflation (you can simply use th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Development Charges Are Finally Being Cut. What Happens Next?
Q: So what impact do you see the DC and HST moves having on Ontario's housing market?
Kim explains the moves are likely to stimulate activity across different markets in the province, with the overall effect being more accessible homeownership and a potential rebalancing of pricing, while noting that implementation and regional variation will shape outcomes.
Paige Saunders: Why the US and Canada are Trapped (and how New Zealand escaped)
Q: How does New Zealand's experience inform Canada's potential path to reform?
New Zealand's experience shows that major reform can occur after prolonged political pressure and crises; it often involves staged referenda and a careful choice of proportional options, suggesting Canada could follow a more deliberative, assembly-based process.
Paige Saunders: Why the US and Canada are Trapped (and how New Zealand escaped)
Q: Why are referendums not the best path for reform?
Referendums tend to be conservative and unpredictable, often failing to drive deep, binding change; a Citizens' Assembly approach is proposed as a more credible and representative method to implement constitutional reforms.
Paige Saunders: Why the US and Canada are Trapped (and how New Zealand escaped)
Q: What is the big fix that could address housing and other reforms?
The guests argue that adopting proportional representation could align policy incentives with broader goals like housing, transportation, and healthcare, because the system would encourage coalitions and representation of diverse voices, rather than catering only to swing ridings.
Are We Ignoring a Generation of Struggling Young Men?
Q: Do you agree with me and Scott that there is a reluctance to address this subject?
Absolutely agree. There is a reluctance and a taboo, although we're seeing that change a little bit now.
