  • Engaging

Essential, entertaining, engaging - love love love this podcast. I’ve arrived late so I’m picking all the eps about my issues (lots) - but eventually I’ll listen to all. James is fantastic at asking pertinent questions and making links to applicable contexts from the Prof’s knowledge and advice.

  • Love it

These two guys are a fabulous combination. The professor is so knowledgeable and down to earth, James is an engaging fellow host. I’m loving this podcast. Can you please cover borderline personality disorder, bipolar 1 and 2 and do more on ptsd? Also, something on inter -generational trauma? Thank you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MYM – How are mental health conditions linked to evolution?
Q: How are mental health conditions linked to evolution?
The guest explains that evolution may favour a spread of traits like anxiety or language-related cognitive patterns in the population, suggesting some conditions persist because they were historically advantageous in certain environments, even if they are not universally beneficial today.
MYM - Autism and Changes to the NDIS
Q: Nicole, what's your initial reaction to Minister Butler's radical proposals to change this National Disability Insurance Scheme?
My initial response is that there's a lot there to consider, and you can't sum it up in a single sentence. There are multiple strands to the reform, including leadership, sustainability, and how to manage the transition for children who might move between schemes.
MYM - Changes to the NDIS
Q: Sebastian, would you mind giving us your overview of the key announcements and big changes Butler signalled yesterday?
Sebastian outlines a scheme-wide move to a functional assessment process, the creation of a technical advisory group, and a push to ensure funding reaches people with permanent and severe disability, while acknowledging challenges in fair assessment across diverse disabilities and the potential impact on those currently receiving supports.
MYM – More Than One Mental Illness
Q: Why is it important to question the accuracy of diagnoses?
Because diagnoses guide access to treatments and services, and inaccurate labels can lead to wrong or suboptimal care; patients should continually verify against their lived experience.
MYM – More Than One Mental Illness
Q: Is there a better way to deal with complex cases beyond rigid diagnostic boxes?
Yes, differentiate clearly between obviously different issues, acknowledge how symptoms interact, and tailor treatment to address multiple problems in parallel rather than treating each in isolation.
