The best approach is to acknowledge the moment, offer clear options (pause, water, break, move to a different practice), check in discreetly, and adapt the meditation to a safer alternative like self‑compassion or grounding with loved ones. If needed, call for additional support or help and ensure the person knows they can step out when necessary.
Grounding Through Anxiety With Senses
Q: Hi Sean. Hi Nicholas. I wanted to share experience, ask you a question because the other day I I was leading a loving kindness meditation with a person who has this diagnostic that it is generalized anxiety disorder. He takes medication, but after the meditation he said to me that during the meditation he dissociated. He like went outside of the situation. His mind like dissociated from the present moment. So during inquiry, I asked him how does this dissociation feel in his body and what did he do to come back? But I wanted to ask you how to deal with this.
Acknowledge the dissociation as information about the person's current processing, inquire gently into what safety feels like for him, and offer flexible anchors (like sounds) while avoiding pressure to “fix” the experience. Encourage journaling, self‑compassion, and gradual movement or breath awareness to reorient the body, always prioritizing safety and consent.
