所谓中国的故事，就是从帝国到民国和民国灭亡 这样一个过程。所谓世界的故事，就是世界其他国家 思想 体制 对中国近代史的影响。所谓民国的故事，就是指 民国梦从无到有到兴盛、民国从无到有又到无 这样一个过程。所谓帝国的故事，就是帝国的解体和帝国梦的消失。这些故事纠缠在一起，彼此对立又相互渗透。这些故事中容纳了各种各样的人，他们种族不同、时代不同、梦想不同、行事风格不同，但却反复纠缠在一起。本文要做的，就是把这样一些事构成一个独立有趣的系统。
本文分成五个部分：

梦想两端：双子星的使命；
山河破碎：被撕裂的灵魂；
暴力时代：乱世蒋介石；
涅槃浴血：浴火周期律。
