  • Proper independent journalism

This is such a refreshing perspective on the news, uncovering what’s really going on underneath the headlines. As an older person I particularly value Mathilda & Helena presenting viewpoints from younger people. I also enjoy hearing them share how other countries and cultures see things. Keep up the good work!

  • Highly recommended!

I have listened to many episodes of the Media Storm podcast, more than I can remember, and it did involve The Guilty Feminist (humorous and meaningful activism) in my history of audio.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The local news decline and why it matters
Q: What caused the decline of local journalism and why does it matter to communities?
A combination of corporate ownership focusing on profits, a shift to digital advertising that drained local revenues, and the end of sustainable local business models has led to fewer reporters on the ground and less original reporting, which in turn weakens community scrutiny and democratic engagement.
Bad Think Tanks: How fake facts get into the news
Q: Peter, as editor of Byline Times, how do you differentiate between good think tanks and bad think tanks?
Transparency of funding and the presence of clear conflicts of interest are key. Good think tanks publish their funders and maintain independent governance, while opaque funding and cozy media ties tend to corrupt objectivity, which is what we see in many of the Tufton Street outfits.
'I don’t do politics': How to fight news fatigue
Q: What role does the by-election and party funding play in the fatigue discussion?
By-elections and money in politics illustrate how corruption and opaque funding erode trust, reinforcing fatigue and the desire for systemic reform.
'I don’t do politics': How to fight news fatigue
Q: How can individuals combat news fatigue in their daily lives?
Limit intake, schedule dedicated times for news, and seek nuanced, balanced reporting rather than constant sensational headlines.
'I don’t do politics': How to fight news fatigue
Q: What conversations does the fatigue issue open the door to?
It opens up discussions about how to reform democracy, how to reconnect people with the consequences of policy in daily life, and how to ensure information is honest and not merely sensational.
