  • Off To A Good Start

Very pleased to find this podcast and to discover the premiere episode covers my favorite movie, The Big Sleep. As much as I would like to quibble with some of the drawbacks the hosts point out with the film, I really can't. They're all fair. I also like that the hosts have obviously read and reference the source novel which a lot of people don't and I think the comparisons they make between the book's strengths and weaknesses and the film's and where the two diverge are pretty spot on. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) | Dir Robert Altman
Q: What would you say to viewers who expect a faithful page-to-screen translation of Chandler's plot?
I'd encourage watching it as a reinterpretation that preserves mood and thematic concerns—additionally, the film is about the act of adaptation itself, not just retelling the story, so the liberties help the film resonate with a new audience while still honoring Chandler's core ideas.
THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) | Dir Robert Altman
Q: Do you think the ending works as a Chandler adaptation, given the deviations from the novel?
Yes, because the ending reinforces Marlowe's ethical framework in a world that has drifted away from that code; it provides necessary catharsis and aligns with the film's overall meditation on loyalty, trust, and the costs of deceit.
THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) | Dir Robert Altman
Q: How do the performances, especially Gould and Hayden, interact with Altman's camera style to create a new kind of noir?
Gould's mumbling, non-traditional delivery paired with Altman's constantly moving camera creates a sense of spontaneity and vulnerability around Marlowe, while Hayden's ferocious presence as Marty Augustine provides a counterweight that makes the dialogue-heavy scenes feel dangerous and alive.
Case 55: IN A LONELY PLACE (1950) | Dir Nicholas Ray
Q: What are your thoughts on the differences of representation of Dixon's character between the book and the movie?
I think both work perfectly in what they're trying to accomplish, but I would nudge towards the film for its three-dimensional characterization.
Case 55: IN A LONELY PLACE (1950) | Dir Nicholas Ray
Q: What is Bogart's best performance?
It's a tie between Casablanca and In A Lonely Place for me. Both are just so iconic and so memorable.
