  • Practical AND evidence-based

Each episode that I have listened to provides practical, reasonable information. It’s not watered down, but it also helps people get out of the weeds (which I admit, I sometimes tend to do ). I am an OT and I will recommend this to all of my clients who are interested in health and wellness and sound, doable nutrition.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Understanding insulin resistance
Q: Testing. What tests indicate if you have this, right? What do I need to ask for?
Fasting insulin is a key marker, since A1C alone doesn't reveal how hard the pancreas is working. An oral glucose tolerance test can also show insulin response after glucose intake.
Understanding insulin resistance
Q: Let's talk about risk factors. Who is usually affected by insulin resistance?
Insulin resistance can affect anyone, with higher risk in certain populations (e.g., Hispanic or African-American descent) and conditions like PCOS; pregnancy and perimenopause can also contribute due to hormonal changes.
Understanding insulin resistance
Q: I'm excited. Let's start with a little bit of insulin resistance 101. What is insulin resistance and essentially what's happening in the body when someone has that?
Insulin resistance is when body cells stop responding to insulin; the pancreas compensates by secreting more insulin, which over time leads to fewer receptors on cells and progressively higher insulin levels, creating a snowball effect.
Nutrition for IBS and IBD
Q: How important is diet relative to other treatments?
Diet can help move disease into remission for some cases, especially mild/moderate Crohn's; it's an adjunct for many patients, with personalization and careful monitoring.
Nutrition for IBS and IBD
Q: What's the basic distinction between IBS and IBD?
IBS is a functional condition diagnosed mainly by ruling out other issues, whereas IBD is an autoimmune disease with visible inflammation that can be seen on scopes.
