  • Great show!

I listen to every episode with interest and take away something useful each time. I love the interviews, but the solo episodes are valuable too.

  • Super straightforward, helpful, unobtrusive

I really appreciate the clarity and expertise of this podcast. It’s not about entertaining effects and storytelling, but content. It’s generous, measured, almost anti-sensationalist, a cure.

  • Absolutely fantastic

Not a single episode that doesn't fascinate me. Thank you for all your hard work. I especially love the clinical topic overviews and the evolutional psychiatry episode. Maybe something on women's health or menopause would be great. There are women's health clinics opening up around the country and it's becoming more of a focus.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sleep Series E1: How Does Sleep Work? (w/ Prof. Russell Foster)
Q: How does light entrain the clock differently across the day?
Dusk light tends to delay the clock, allowing later waking and bedtimes, while morning light advances it, prompting earlier schedules. The timing and intensity of light exposure are crucial for keeping the internal day synced with the external world.
Sleep Series E1: How Does Sleep Work? (w/ Prof. Russell Foster)
Q: What pulled you to look at circadian rhythms?
Three key influences guided me: inspirational lectures during my undergraduate studies, a fascination with how internal clocks regulate physiology, and early hands‑on work on light systems such as the pineal photoreceptor, which together steered me toward circadian biology.
Key Moment: What People Get Wrong About Sobriety (w/ Catherine Gray)
Q: Why did you initially think sobriety might be dull, and what changed your mind?
She describes expecting a dull process but quickly realizing the emotional highs in early sobriety, followed by a cascade of positive ripple effects across life, leading to the belief that sobriety can be dramatically more joyful than drinking.
Key Moment: What People Get Wrong About Sobriety (w/ Catherine Gray)
Q: What can you tell us a little bit about what are the joys of sobriety?
Catherine explains that sobriety brings numerous improvements—physically, emotionally, and socially—such as better sleep, more energy, improved relationships, and a broader range of meaningful activities, which collectively make life more vibrant and fulfilling.
E172 | How to Live Courageously (Existential Psychotherapy w/ Emmy van Deurzen)
Q: What makes a good therapist in existential practice, based on your experience?
A good existential therapist is curious about the human condition, has lived experience or strong empathy, and can engage with clients as equals in a dialogue that explores values, meaning, and reality. The therapist should avoid jumping in to solve for the client and instead illuminate possibilities, helping the client discover their own paths.
