  • Great show!

I listen to every episode with interest and take away something useful each time. I love the interviews, but the solo episodes are valuable too.

  • Super straightforward, helpful, unobtrusive

I really appreciate the clarity and expertise of this podcast. It’s not about entertaining effects and storytelling, but content. It’s generous, measured, almost anti-sensationalist, a cure.

  • Absolutely fantastic

Not a single episode that doesn't fascinate me. Thank you for all your hard work. I especially love the clinical topic overviews and the evolutional psychiatry episode. Maybe something on women's health or menopause would be great. There are women's health clinics opening up around the country and it's becoming more of a focus.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E178 | Our Idiot Brains, Happiness & Antidepressants (w/ Dr. Dean Burnett)
Q: You wrote a book about happiness; what was the most surprising thing you learned that you still apply personally?
Happiness is not about constant positive emotion; it's about a balanced engagement with both positive and negative emotions, and allowing oneself to experience a range of states rather than forcing perpetual cheerfulness.
E178 | Our Idiot Brains, Happiness & Antidepressants (w/ Dr. Dean Burnett)
Q: What are your thoughts on antidepressants and how much we actually understand about them?
Antidepressants work through complex, interconnected brain systems beyond a simple chemical imbalance; outcomes depend on multiple factors, including neuroplasticity and inflammation, and they are most effective when used as part of a broader treatment plan.
E178 | Our Idiot Brains, Happiness & Antidepressants (w/ Dr. Dean Burnett)
Q: From a neuroscientific point of view, what are some principles people can use to get unstuck on their path to potential?
The brain craves tangible progress, so creating micro-goals and quick wins helps motivate continued effort and prevents discouragement from slow, long-term changes.
E178 | Our Idiot Brains, Happiness & Antidepressants (w/ Dr. Dean Burnett)
Q: What do you think is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about the way the brain works?
People often romanticize the brain as a perfect, fully logical organ. In reality, it's imperfect and full of quirks; recognizing its flaws can make it easier to cope with when things go wrong.
E175 | How to Stop Fighting Your Mind (w/ Professor Kalina Christoff Hadjiilieva)
Q: Why is it crucial to understand thought and study its nature?
Thought is a constant companion that shapes our experiences; understanding its varieties—from spontaneous to deliberate—helps us navigate life, improve well-being, and utilize mental states more adaptively.
