When you listen to an orchestra, what makes its sound distinctive? Is it the concert hall, the conductor, the players, or even their instruments? While some argue that most orchestras end up sounding alike, others insist each ensemble has its own unm... more
Today, we’re unravelling a piece that’s as simple as it is spellbinding - one of the most well known and oddly mesmerising compositions of the 20th century. Some call it brilliant, others find it unbearable, and few sit on the fence. And the piece th... more
The violin section of an orchestra is split into two halves: first violins and second violins. Do the firsts really get all the glory while the seconds do the heavy lifting, or are the seconds the orchestra’s unsung heroes? In an effort to decide whe... more

Whether you are a connoisseur or starting to get into classical music, this is a fun way to learn and enjoy music.
This is a great classical music podcast! The host is an excellent and enthusiastic interviewer. A really enjoyable podcast that gives great insights into the everyday world of classical musicians. It would if you could feature chorus members more often - maybe an episode on Janacek’s wild and wonderful Glagolitic Mass that I see the choir are performing in May?
I only came across this recently as the result of the great British podcasts site and have been bingeing ever since. My only disappointment is that I am getting close to catching up.
For a regular long term concert attender , these insights are fascinating and a delight to hear that while the musicians are such highly skilled and experienced professionals, they are ordinary people with a good sense of humour. I only wish there were other similar podcasts with performers sharing insights into ... more
