Paul Eastwick and Eli Finkel explain what your favorite romantic films get right -- and wrong -- about the science of romance. Because it's time for scientists to take Ryan Gosling as seriously as you do.

  • Genius format

Incredibly bingeable listens. I’m a sucker for good rom coms. As a hopeless romantic, it’s grounding to hear an academic perspective on the relationship dynamics in these movies. This is such a genius format because these movies enter the cultural consciousness and have a huge impact on our perspectives, hopes, and fantasies about love and romance, and it’s great to unpack that.

  • Great concept

My two favorite things in one podcast, movies and psychology. There are so many iconic movies to review. Would love to hear the breakdown of “He’s Just Not That Into You” and the “Something,s Gotta Give”.

Romeo + Juliet (1996) with Donovan Sherman
Q: Donovan, what do you think about the balcony scene?
The balcony scene is transformed into a pool scene in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation, which captures a contemporary essence while giving Juliet agency as opposed to the traditional distance implied in the balcony setting.
The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005)
Q: What themes do you think the film addresses about attraction and close relationships?
The film highlights the importance of genuine connection, societal expectations of masculinity, and the idea that attraction isn't solely based on superficial traits.
Bonus Episode: Paul and Eli on the Speaking of Psychology Podcast with Kim Mills
Q: Do movies give us an unrealistic idea of how relationships should work or do they actually help people have better relationships?
With a lot of romantic movies, they want to end on a high note, which can imply that once you figure it out, everything's going to be fine. That's not accurate, as rocky periods often emerge in relationships.
Bonus Episode: Paul and Eli on the Speaking of Psychology Podcast with Kim Mills
Q: How did you two scientists get the idea to do a podcast together about romantic comedies?
We realized that we could combine our interests in movies and psychology into a podcast that uses relationship science to evaluate the themes that romantic films depict.

The pottery scene illustrates the intimate connection between partners, emphasizing how shared creative activities can enhance feelings of closeness and passion in a relationship.
