Mary’s Journey: Healing Beyond Transplant
Q: How did you deal with the realization that you're here, you're alive, you have a portion of someone's liver?
It was a shock. I woke up with a tube in my throat and it took me at least 24 hours to register that I had major surgery and was alive. Comprehending the gravity of the gift I received took time, but it motivated me to seek help for my mental health.
Mary’s Journey: Healing Beyond Transplant
Q: When you are told you needed a transplant, did you understand how sick you were?
To a certain extent, I did, but it didn't feel real. My transplant journey was very quick with about 72 hours between being admitted to the hospital and receiving the transplant, so I didn't have time to process what was happening.
Twice the Gift: Megan’s Double Anonymous Living Donor Story | Patient Stories | Organ Donation | Medical Experts
Q: How did people in your circles feel about you donating anonymously?
Megan reported that her family and friends were supportive, although there were some concerns about the risk involved with the liver donation.
Twice the Gift: Megan’s Double Anonymous Living Donor Story | Patient Stories | Organ Donation | Medical Experts
Q: What motivated you to step forward each time?
Megan was motivated by her childhood friend's kidney disease, which deepened her desire to help others and led her to seek out ways to donate anonymously after researching the transplant system.
The Other Side of the Hug
Q: What would you say to people who are considering becoming a living donor but might be nervous about it?
Getting the right information and asking all the questions is crucial.
