  • Was great

Was a great podcast prior to them parting ways with Matty. Now just another monotone finance podcast from 2 guys who have never stepped foot on a mine site. Hard listen most episodes, shame given the heyday was unique and provided great insight.

  • Love the show Matt and JC

Great back to back episodes from JC and Matt. Love to hear it from the Aussie POV in the world of mining. Can’t wait for some Canadian content too, especially discussions of North American producers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Deficits Drive Bull Markets (Sam Berridge)
Q: Do you see the current policy environment in Australia as supportive or hindering for mining investment, especially in the small-cap space?
Overall, the guest suggests policy actions are hindering by raising the cost of capital and creating uncertainty, which reduces drilling and project advancement among explorers and miners.
Sandfire’s Brendan Harris: Risk Less, Win Bigger
Q: How do you view the role of Kalkaroo and MATSA in Sandfire's portfolio strategy?
He describes Kalkaroo as a transformational opportunity that strengthens the portfolio's international footprint and leverages existing assets responsibly, with MATSA illustrating how restructuring can de-risk financing and support capital allocation.
Sandfire’s Brendan Harris: Risk Less, Win Bigger
Q: How do you think about taking on individual risk within Sandfire while still managing a conservative philosophy?
Brendan explains that risk is managed by maintaining a balance sheet fit for purpose, focusing on cash flow resilience, and selecting opportunities that offer asymmetric returns rather than chasing growth for growth's sake.
Rick Squire on the Junior Miners That Can Actually Make It
Q: How do you balance liquidity with exposure to illiquid early-stage opportunities?
He notes that a firm with around $200 million under management must ride out drawdowns in smaller names, maintain a stable explorer allocation (around 20-25%), and use pullbacks in the explorer segment to systematically add to positions in better-quality projects, like Midas.
Rick Squire on the Junior Miners That Can Actually Make It
Q: What lessons from Q1 are sticking in your mind?
Rick reflects on how January's strong performance forced a rethink about liquidity management and the discipline of selling winners to reset portfolios, while March's macro shock reset expectations and reinforced the need to differentiate by commodity cycle stage rather than chasing all high-flyers.
