Cybersecurity Horror Stories in Due Diligence and Post-Closing with Nick Akers
Q: What is a practical post-close step to protect value?
Establish a CEO-led commitment to actionable changes, implement MFA everywhere, migrate to cloud-based tools, and deploy ongoing employee training to reduce risk exposure and support a smooth transition.
Cybersecurity Horror Stories in Due Diligence and Post-Closing with Nick Akers
Q: How can a buyer integrate cybersecurity into due diligence before closing?
Use a detailed IT due diligence checklist, perform a 30-day cybersecurity risk assessment, and set up a pre-close evaluation that ranks opportunities and threats, with clear cost implications for remediation.
Build It. Bank It. Sell It. Repeat.
Q: How do you coach buyers and sellers to align their expectations and avoid a stalled deal?
I start with education—giving PDFs and books to sellers to ground their valuations, then bring buyers and sellers onto separate Zoom calls to address fears and overinflated prices. I push both sides to focus on realistic cash flow and beyond-the-sale life planning, including selecting an operator to run the business post-close.
Build It. Bank It. Sell It. Repeat.
Q: What's one of the weirdest or most creative ways you've seen someone make money, as you probably looked at tens of thousands of businesses?
One memorable example was selling the source code that built PowerPoint, which demonstrated how valuable underlying technology can be, even years after its creation. Another notable case involved a beer-batch valve inventor who created a patented process that moved liquid between tanks, illustrating how process innovations can scale into lucrative products.
4 CPA/Bookkeeper Acquisitions with Patrick Dichter
Q: What defines a good client for your firm?
We look for clients who appreciate our value and are responsive, avoiding those who delay or complicate communication.
