I was on board until I found out about the host’s conversion to Catholicism, which reframes the podcast from deconstruction to a selective critique of religious power. It’s difficult to take institutional abuse seriously when aligning with a church defined by systemic historical child abuse, the exclusion of women from leadership, vast stockpiling of wealth, the ongoing exclusion of LGBTQ+ people, and a pivotal role in colonialism, imperialism, and slavery. You can’t meaningfully critique author... more
The hosts are so authentic and knowledgeable. Highly recommended if you want to understand cults better.
So in episode 250 the guest used 11-12-13 year olds as examples of people who use abortions after partying. Hosts should have pushed back. Children who cannot consent are survivors of assault- not partiers. Please correct this right away.
Wish the female host would have let Amy talk more. She kept interrupting Amy and comparing her life to hers. Wanted to hear more about the book. It was disappointing.
Gavi making jokes about wishing he is a man in these types of cults undermines very serious harm that women have undergone throughout history. Wish someone would keep him in check.

Exploring the intersection of fundamentalism, cults, and personal narratives, insightful discussions take center stage, driven largely by the experiences of a cult survivor and her co-host. Episodes commonly tackle themes such as the implications of purity culture, the mechanics of evangelism, and critical evaluations of religious media including popular reality television shows. Engaging anecdotes lend context while humor softens the intensity of complex topics like trauma and the psychological control employed by cults. With a commitment to fostering freedom of choice, thought, and belief, this series encourages an open dialogue around these often-taboo subjects and invites listeners to contemplate the broader societal implications of cul... more
