  • Fantastic and Cathartic

Understanding can be such a key step in healing, and Jake and Brooke bring so much light to those niggly little evangelical brain worms that can be hard to dislodge otherwise! Jake’s diligent research and Brooke’s questions and reactions pair perfectly. It’s so refreshing to hear Brooke be like “okay that’s WILD” about something that was “normal” in my childhood—and I can join in like, “you know what? That WAS wild!”

  • I love this podcast.

I accidentally found this podcast, and I am so glad I did. It is not fueled by hate, as the title would suggest, the information is dissected and reviewed in a fair and balanced manner. It is very educational, and it reveals a lot. Everyone should listen to it, including people who think they approve of James Dobson.

  • Wow, what a great podcast!

I just discovered it and started at the beginning. Interesting and funny hosts, and if you grew up in a Dobson-influenced home as I did, pretty cathartic. My parents had an ostentatious spanking paddle as well, with a picture of Bart Simpson drawn on it and it said ‘Cowabunga dude’. I love that they can see the humor in such a dark topic, in the way only ex-evangelicals can.

  • I feel seen

I love this podcast! One of the things I struggle with is having the language to describe the way I grew up. This podcast has helped give me the framework to explain why I don’t go to church or want to associate with them. Why I have so much animosity for Christianity. It also really helped me see the through line of Dobson and how he was directly responsible for the parenting philosophy my family used.

  • Warm funny podcast for anyone with religious trauma. Have re-listened to all the episodes

I love these two friends and colleague, and their relationship to each other and their world. They are the warmest and it’s like curling up on the sofa with some nice whiskey and getting angry in the best way about the horror and idiocy of American evangelical patriarchy
