  • “Irreverent yet scholarly” is right, plus it’s more fun than rolling down a haystack

If you think of yourself as a bit of a Laura Ingalls Wilder geek, OR if you aspire to being one, you’ve found your people on this podcast. Every week there’s a different take on the Little House books (and yes, it is about the books, so if you’re only interested in the TV show, maybe it isn’t for you), talking to authors, historians, scientists, researchers - all kinds of experts (my favorite so far was a conversation with two doctors who researched into why Mary went blind). And the host is sup... more

"I'll Wear My Delaine." Laura Keyes Returns for Caroline Ingalls' Delaine Dress and Pioneer Women's Underwear
Q: What does the bustle add to the 1850s silhouette, and how practical was it?
The bustle concentrates fabric at the back to create a puffed silhouette; it is a complex undergarment with various closures, generally impractical for farm work but essential for formal wear and the look described in Laura's era.
"I'll Wear My Delaine." Laura Keyes Returns for Caroline Ingalls' Delaine Dress and Pioneer Women's Underwear
Q: How would Caroline have worn the Delaine in later years?
Caroline would have adapted the dress by comparing it to current fashions of the 1870s, with a skilled seamstress modifying the gown to fit the then-new silhouettes, possibly over a cage crinoline or hoop, illustrating practical fashion evolution.
"I'll Wear My Delaine." Laura Keyes Returns for Caroline Ingalls' Delaine Dress and Pioneer Women's Underwear
Q: Tell me about the history of Ma's Delaine.
Laura Keyes explains that the Delaine is a woolen fabric described as dark green with a pattern, named by Mrs. Wilder, and that it likely originated in the East with a dressmaker, later appearing as a chalice in another book; the dress is tied to a careful timeline linking to Plum Creek and the Big Woods.
Erin Blakemore, Part 2: Listening to Audiobooks of Little House on the Prairie Hits Different
Q: When did you realize some of these interpretive angles, like Pa's behavior at the straw stack, changed your understanding?
Erin describes gaining new perspectives in adulthood, especially around parenting moments and the emotional subtext of scenes, which reshaped how she reads the books.
Erin Blakemore, Part 2: Listening to Audiobooks of Little House on the Prairie Hits Different
Q: So let me ask, did you also include the first four years in your audiobook?
Erin explains that she did not include the first four years and discusses why it presents a tonal and thematic challenge within the series, noting the book's adult themes and its place as a companion to the rest of the Little House canon.
