  • Enjoyable and “real”

I’m just getting into knives, so admittedly I’m not that knowledgeable yet the show works for me. It has a simple, unpretentious tone. Informative and enjoyable.

These guys are genuine, unpretentious and super knowledgeable. They’re passionate about their craft and love to share it. For a guy like me who has no knife making knowledge whatsoever, they’re eager to answer questions, provide tips and really go out of their way to make a novice feel comfortable!

  • Ok

Ok podcast, Kyle is great and always has good info. Dan on the other hand makes the podcast hard to listen too, it’s like listening to a middle school boy trying to be funny with crude jokes. To bad Dan brings the work of Kyle down.

119 – Brett Onnink
Q: How did you get into knives?
Brett describes a transition from railroad spike knives and tomahawks made for ultramarathon finisher awards to formal knife making, including taking classes and learning mosaic techniques, which gradually evolved into professional kitchen knives.
119 – Brett Onnink
Q: Where did you grow up?
Brett grew up on an 80-acre property near Lake Michigan in rural Wisconsin, which shaped his hands-on, resourceful approach to knife making.
120 – Pops ProCut and MagnaMax
Q: What about corrosion resistance in MagnaMax compared to MagnaCut?
MagnaMax aims to achieve corrosion resistance similar to MagnaCut, but early batches showed some chromium carbide-related issues due to carbon content variations; final material will depend on mill specifications and proper carbon-chromium balance.
120 – Pops ProCut and MagnaMax
Q: Is ProCut exclusive to Pops Knife Supply?
ProCut is a steel developed with Pops Knife Supply; discussions indicate it has close ties to Pops for distribution, though the exact exclusivity details depend on distributor arrangements and regional availability.
120 – Pops ProCut and MagnaMax
Q: What makes MagnaMax different from MagnaCut?
MagnaMax shifts the balance toward higher edge retention with medium toughness, aiming for knives that cut longer at high hardness, while MagnaCut aimed for a balanced mix of toughness and edge retention. This makes MagnaMax particularly appealing for folders and high-hardness kitchen blades, though heat-treatment and corrosion behavior are still in development.
