  • Really good

This is a great podcast. The content is really helpful. There were a few episodes with sound issues - it sounded like the speakers were taking big gulps of air which was distracting. The content is worth listening to so try to though.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S12, E9: Do My Extracurricular Activities Have to Be Related to My Intended Major?
Q: How can a student describe a non-aligned strongest activity in a way that admissions will understand and value?
Students should emphasize depth, sustained commitment, growth, leadership, and the meaningful impact they've had within that activity, and tell a coherent story about how it reflects their interests, future goals, and character, even if it's not the major they're pursuing.
S12, E9: Do My Extracurricular Activities Have to Be Related to My Intended Major?
Q: So should the strongest or longest activity map onto a student's major of interest?
Yes and no. Activities can align with the intended major and strengthen the application by reflecting genuine interest and depth (e.g., robotics for engineering, school newspaper for journalism). They are not required to align perfectly, and many students pursue activities outside their major while still showing impact, leadership, and growth; admissions teams look for a holistic profile and authentic commitment.
S12, E7: Do I Need a Dramatic Topic for My College Application Essay?
Q: What about using the prompts versus choosing your own topic?
They discuss balancing prompt options with openness to choosing a topic of your own, emphasizing that what matters most is how well the topic conveys the student's story and growth.
S12, E7: Do I Need a Dramatic Topic for My College Application Essay?
Q: How should students start brainstorming topics for their essay?
Victoria recommends organic exploration through free writing, prompts, and motivational interviewing to surface topics that genuinely reflect the student's values and experiences.
S12, E7: Do I Need a Dramatic Topic for My College Application Essay?
Q: Do I need a dramatic topic for my college application essay?
Victoria responds that a dramatic topic is not required; the emphasis should be on authenticity, coherence, and how the topic reveals the writer's character and growth.
