I found this podcast a few months ago, and I’ve listened to a bunch of the current and past episodes. I appreciate the way Mark and the other hosts break down a big process into smaller pieces. My daughter is currently a junior, so I’ve taken a bunch of notes! Thanks for all you do!

  • So angry…. Remove your IEC episode!!

I am writing as a listener, parent of an autistic/ADHD son, and IEC, who loves working with neurodivergent students.

I am writing with unbelievable disappointment and anger with the latest episode about IECs. It was wildly misinformed and harmful to all families, particularly those that have children with different/specific/special needs.

My son is autistic and has ADHD and I believe it is important to validate parents who want additional support for their children and offer options for them ... more

  • Absolutely Shocked

I’m writing as a listener and a parent of two students in college who graduated from an independent day school in Southern California. Both of my children worked closely with two different experienced and highly ethical independent educational consultants (IECs), and I can say without hesitation that these professionals provided more consistent, personalized, and supportive guidance than what was available through their school-based counselor—despite her being capable and well-intentioned.

    That... more

YCBK 629: Understanding How Admissions Buckets Impact Admission Decisions
Q: How much will a D in Algebra II hurt, and are there schools more forgiving of a bad grade?
The impact depends on the school; for large public universities it can be more prohibitive, but you can mitigate by showing improved performance in subsequent math courses, explaining in the additional information section, and considering options like credit recovery or retaking the course if appropriate.
YCBK 630: How Can My Student Stand Out in a Competitive Applicant Pool-5 of 6
Q: How should families interpret a school's curriculum and resources when evaluating fit?
Families should look beyond major names and examine how a college delivers its curriculum, the pace and structure (e.g., block plans, trimesters), and the campus culture. Understanding where funding goes inside the university—the budget signals priorities—helps reveal where the focus lies and whether a school can support a student's desired learning style and opportunities.
YCBK 630: How Can My Student Stand Out in a Competitive Applicant Pool-5 of 6
Q: What are your thoughts on resumes in the college admission process?
The resume is controversial because different schools want different things; some see value in a concise, audited set of experiences, while others worry about equity and prefer to avoid rewarding resources that allow elaborate resumes. The key is equity—apples-to-apples comparisons—while also recognizing that resumes can show growth and provide context not captured elsewhere, as long as they stay within the space asked for by the application.
YCBK 627: How Can My Student Stand Out in a Competitive Admission Pool
Q: What are the dos and don'ts for reaching out to territory managers and how influential are they on admission decisions?
Territory managers vary by school, and while they can influence the reader's context, their impact is strongest at smaller, holistic, and less selective institutions where relationships matter more; otherwise, their influence is limited and should be balanced with your overall demonstrated interest and fit.
YCBK 625: Does Taking a Gap Year Increase Your Chances of Getting in College
Q: Would reapplying through early decision to a school the year after being denied in regular decision yield a different result?
Yes, it could, especially if the student uses the gap year to gain new experiences, writes a newer, more reflective essay, and clearly shows why the target school is the right fit. However, the outcome depends on the competitiveness of the pool and the individual's updated profile.
