  • Great podcast

I’ve greatly enjoyed this podcast. I have high-performing junior in high school, so it’s helpful to hear admission counselors from so many wonderful universities. It’s far different from college admissions 30 years ago! I especially enjoy the student interviews.

  • Very Helpful!

John is a wonderful host who asks thoughtful and leading questions. Many of his guests work in admissions for highly competitive colleges/universities. These interviews provide incredibly helpful insight into the culture of the school, what types of students “thrive” in the institution, and the overall admissions process. Thank you! (parent)

  • Nothing that most don’t already know

The content is very repetitive and rarely is there any info that most don’t already know. The host’s constant giggling is very annoying, making it hard to listen to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

373. University of Alaska Fairbanks - Palmer H. Muntz - Senior Regional Admissions Counselor
Q: How does UAF approach its admissions review and what makes the process different from a holistic review?
Palmer clarifies that UAF does not use a holistic review; instead, admissions focus on three factors—desired degree/major, courses taken, and grades—while offering pathways through exploratory studies or undeclared majors when necessary; essays and SAT/ACT scores are not part of the decision.
373. University of Alaska Fairbanks - Palmer H. Muntz - Senior Regional Admissions Counselor
Q: What type of student truly thrives at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and are there qualities academically or personally that align with the university's environment and campus culture?
Palmer explains that adventurous, independent students who are open to new experiences tend to thrive, and that you don't have to be an outdoorsy person to fit in; the campus culture is inclusive and accommodates diverse backgrounds and interests.
371. Stevens Institute of Technology - Carlos Cano - Director of Undergraduate Admissions
Q: Now, Carlos, what is Stevens' current approach to standardized test and what advice would you give students?
Stevens remains test-optional through 2029, based on data showing minimal difference in outcomes between submitted and non-submitted scores; the emphasis stays on the academic transcript, rigor, and overall fit rather than test results, with guidance to submit scores only if it reduces anxiety or adds value for the student.
370. University of Idaho - Casey Campbell - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: What are your top three pieces of advice for students and their families getting ready for the college admissions process?
Do thorough research to ensure programs fit interests, proactively reach out to admissions counselors to ask questions, and whenever possible visit the campus or participate in virtual tours to assess fit firsthand.
370. University of Idaho - Casey Campbell - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: What should families know about the full financial picture at the U of I, including tuition, scholarships, the Western Undergraduate Exchange, and other options?
U of I offers several options like the WUE with substantial tuition discounts, stackable WUE Scholars awards based on GPA, and the Invitation Idaho Scholarship, all combined with federal and institutional aid to make the total cost more affordable.
