  • I’ve greatly enjoyed this podcast. I have high-performing junior in high school, so it’s helpful to hear admission counselors from so many wonderful universities. It’s far different from college admissions 30 years ago! I especially enjoy the student interviews.

  • Very Helpful!

John is a wonderful host who asks thoughtful and leading questions. Many of his guests work in admissions for highly competitive colleges/universities. These interviews provide incredibly helpful insight into the culture of the school, what types of students “thrive” in the institution, and the overall admissions process. Thank you! (parent)

  • Nothing that most don’t already know

The content is very repetitive and rarely is there any info that most don’t already know. The host’s constant giggling is very annoying, making it hard to listen to.

  • Great resource!

This podcast is so helpful and appreciated. I am a mom of twins who are juniors and we are making our college lists. The interviews with admissions staff are great for going beyond the superficial info listed in college guides. Also, I just sent an email with a suggestion. I was surprised to get an almost instantaneous reply from the host. Highly recommend this podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

370. University of Idaho - Casey Campbell - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: What are your top three pieces of advice for students and their families getting ready for the college admissions process?
Do thorough research to ensure programs fit interests, proactively reach out to admissions counselors to ask questions, and whenever possible visit the campus or participate in virtual tours to assess fit firsthand.
370. University of Idaho - Casey Campbell - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: What should families know about the full financial picture at the U of I, including tuition, scholarships, the Western Undergraduate Exchange, and other options?
U of I offers several options like the WUE with substantial tuition discounts, stackable WUE Scholars awards based on GPA, and the Invitation Idaho Scholarship, all combined with federal and institutional aid to make the total cost more affordable.
370. University of Idaho - Casey Campbell - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: Casey, from your perspective, how does the timing of a student's application affect the scholarships they have offered or the information families receive about financial aid?
Applying early doesn't disadvantage students but gives more time and clarity; timing matters for financial planning and for receiving aid offers sooner, while some scholarships and programs are automatic and don't require extra applications.
367. Inside College Admissions at Skidmore College: Essays, Test-Optional Advice, and What Really Matters
Q: What would you say to a student or a parent who asks whether a student should submit test scores if they are on the edge of the middle 50%?
Submitters should consider the context of their high school and the school's typical middle 50% range, but test scores are not the defining feature; use them to supplement, not replace, a strong overall application.
366. UC Berkeley - Jua Howard - Assistant Director of Admissions
Q: How does your team balance academic metrics with personal insight and overall context, especially without standardized test scores?
Berkeley looks at the full picture: coursework rigor, grades, teacher recommendations, and extracurriculars, all in the context of the student's school and opportunities. Test scores are not the sole determinant; we value how students maximize their available resources and how they contribute to their community.
