Reading the Brain Without Opening the Skull | Tom Oxley, Synchron
Q: What are the core challenges in bringing a brain-computer interface to market, and what milestones have you hit so far?
The main hurdles are mechanical-electrical integration, long-term stability, and safe, scalable delivery inside the brain without craniotomy. The team has progressed from early, invasive approaches to a catheter-delivered, multi-sensor stent with 12 channels, achieved a design freeze, and is preparing for larger-scale trials and eventual FDA pivotal studies.
The Mission to Get Breakthrough Brain Treatments to Everyone | Jacques Carolan of ARIA
Q: How do you structure a program to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and scale impact beyond what a single lab could achieve?
By funding multiple teams under two main technical areas, enabling cross-team interaction, providing translational and regulatory support, and maintaining a strong emphasis on lived experience and adoption, with quarterly reviews and the possibility of pivoting or terminating projects as needed.
The Mission to Get Breakthrough Brain Treatments to Everyone | Jacques Carolan of ARIA
Q: As you think about reaching similar levels of efficacy with new paradigms, are you pursuing smaller, easier-to-deploy technologies or optimizing existing stacks to reduce procedural burden?
We are pursuing both: pushing for efficacy while simultaneously exploring ways to reduce procedural burden through non-invasive approaches and better delivery methods, aiming for scalable, outpatient solutions.
