  • My body is a research lab

Dr. Hunter’s podcast has been a lifesaver for me in terms of learning how to manage my OA. I’ve learned so much! But most important is the acceptance that success doesn’t come overnight, patience and determination are key. This is my #1 shared podcast. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

Dr. Virginia Kraus, a leading rheumatologist and researcher

She never said what biomarkers she is researching in a phase III clinical trial. Not much use without that. She did mention the panel is $250 and I realize it isn’t commercially available, but what is she researching?! I did an internet search and followed the study links, but they are talking about different things. Is it HDL, LPS from bacteria? Details are important.

  • excellent info

I was told that I have severe OA. I found angry@arhritis online. It is a very good podcast. Your podcast was discussed so I subscribed. I had so much run around with GPs for multiple years and got nowhere for my leg/hip/groin pain. Saw a PA. She got me x-rayed and by that time it showed severe OA. Thank you for this podcast for making me feel that i am not alone being in chronic pain and hopefully with science, help will come.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The evidence behind knee bracing with Dr Melanie Holden
Q: What were the main adherence strategies, and which seemed most effective?
A combination of motivational interviewing by physiotherapists and a text-message reminder system; both supported adherence and, importantly, remained acceptable to participants and providers, with adherence correlating to better outcomes.
The evidence behind knee bracing with Dr Melanie Holden
Q: Mel, why knee bracing specifically, and why now in this research area?
The move to brace-based strategies comes from a need for safe, affordable, scalable options that can enhance activity and quality of life; the PROP trial was designed to test both clinical and cost considerations for compartment-specific bracing and adherence support given the existing gaps in evidence.
The sleep-pain connection with A/Prof Michelle Hall
Q: When should clinicians refer OA patients for sleep management or sleep disorders?
Refer when sleep problems are significant or persistent, particularly if insomnia symptoms, snoring or daytime sleepiness are present. CBTI should be considered as a first-line approach for insomnia, and sleep studies or specialist input may be needed for suspected sleep apnea or more complex sleep disorders.
The sleep-pain connection with A/Prof Michelle Hall
Q: How does the sleep-to-pain connection actually work in osteoarthritis?
Sleep disturbance is common in OA and sleep loss can heighten pain sensitivity the next day. Mechanistically, poor sleep may disrupt clearance of metabolic waste from the brain, impacting immune pathways and amplifying pain signals; conversely, pain disrupts sleep, creating a vicious cycle that can worsen over time.
The sleep-pain connection with A/Prof Michelle Hall
Q: Can you share a bit more about your background and what a typical day looks like?
My background is in exercise science with a growing focus on sleep and its health impacts. A typical day involves student meetings, trial activities, paper reviews, and international collaborations. This daily variety fuels ongoing research and clinical work in OA care.
