  • Lots of interesting thoughts about language and culture

I have been enjoying these podcasts since becoming a student of “Irish with Mollie”. Mollie and her guests discuss many interesting ideas about language and culture. I can’t help revisiting, over and over, the contrast between “Tá brón orm” (Sadness is on me) and “I am sad” as an example of how different cultures process feelings.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#48: Dr. Darragh Stewart: Healing, Men's work, and the Irish Psyche
Q: Tell us a bit about how you got into the work you do and what sparked the shift from science to healing.
The journey began from personal suffering and mental health challenges, leading to meditation, yoga, and a scientific curiosity that eventually drew me toward facilitating men's circles, retreats, and psychedelic-assisted work as a way to heal myself and help others.
#47: Sophia Smith Galer - How to Kill a Language
Q: Had you always thought about writing a book about languages or?
Sophia describes an evolution from creating viral language videos to writing a full-length book; the momentum came from experiences in journalism, feedback from audiences who carried a personal stake in language survival, and a desire to provide practical, publishable ideas for communities to revive languages rather than just analyze them.
#47: Sophia Smith Galer - How to Kill a Language
Q: Is it because of gender norms? What is it that ties women so often to use roles of transmitters of culture and heritage within a family?
Sophia explains that while there are many theories, in her research women repeatedly emerge as pivotal language transmitters due to domestic roles and long-standing cultural expectations, with chapters highlighting mothers and grandmothers facilitating language transmission within households, often more intensively than fathers. She stresses that this is influenced by social structures, not an innate instinct.
#45: Yuji Beleza: Loving Languages
Q: What kind of tips would you have for learning a language?
Focus on daily routine, make learning enjoyable, and maintain consistency, with an emphasis on empathy and joy rather than chasing fluency perfection.
#43: Patrick Lynham Van den Boom: An Irish Clown on the Art of Failure
Q: What tips do you have for people who find it difficult to allow themselves to fail?
Recognize that failure is a natural part of learning; create simple, repeatable exercises that place you in the 'square' of the moment, gradually expanding how long you stay in it and how you respond. Use tools like imagining a square around the challenge, breathing through fear, and reframing mistakes as information that guides next steps. Start with small, safe steps, celebrate tiny progress, and remember that saying yes to trying is more important than getting it perfect.
