  • Lots of interesting thoughts about language and culture

I have been enjoying these podcasts since becoming a student of “Irish with Mollie”. Mollie and her guests discuss many interesting ideas about language and culture. I can’t help revisiting, over and over, the contrast between “Tá brón orm” (Sadness is on me) and “I am sad” as an example of how different cultures process feelings.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#43: Patrick Lynham Van den Boom: An Irish Clown on the Art of Failure
Q: What tips do you have for people who find it difficult to allow themselves to fail?
Recognize that failure is a natural part of learning; create simple, repeatable exercises that place you in the 'square' of the moment, gradually expanding how long you stay in it and how you respond. Use tools like imagining a square around the challenge, breathing through fear, and reframing mistakes as information that guides next steps. Start with small, safe steps, celebrate tiny progress, and remember that saying yes to trying is more important than getting it perfect.
#38 An Maolchathach
Q: What do you think would make Ireland bilingual in our lifetime?
I think doing little bits like that as much as we can in having Irish as a language that we can use instead of English would be great.
#38 An Maolchathach
Q: How did you learn Irish? Did you grow up with it?
I wish it was my first language, but it's not. I went to English speaking primary school, but then I went to a Gaelic school here in Limerick.
#36: Yoga le Naoise
Q: Do you think it would make a difference when you're teaching in English versus Irish? What does Irish bring to the yoga class?
Nisha discusses how initially she struggled with using Irish in her classes due to a limited vocabulary, but has learned that the language feels more genuine and connects deeply to her energetic presence, enhancing the overall experience.
#36: Yoga le Naoise
Q: So tell us a bit about how you got into yoga in the first place, and how your practice has evolved over time?
Nisha shares that she has been practicing yoga since she was 15, first attending classes with her mother. The experience supported her through various life challenges, and inspired her to become a yoga teacher after seeing how deeply rooted and holistic the practice is.
