  • Entertainment & Education

I love listening to the podcast. It’s incredibly entertaining, but it also delivers a tremendous amount of education to listeners. Even if you’ve been hiking or involved in the outdoor community for decades, there’s always something new to learn from the conversations and experiences they share. • Great stories

I moved back to the Hudson Valley this summer after being away for about 15years, with only occasional visits. This podcast has been an incredible source of inspiration for hikes, history, books, and drives around the Catskills. It’s clued me into so many topics I wasn’t familiar with and reminded me of stories and places I forgot about.

The banter between the guys is hilarious and Tad is quick as a whip with the dad jokes. Absolutely awesome podcast.

Episode 226 - The Catskill Aqueduct with Professor Kevin Bone
Q: How did post-World War II changes shape water infrastructure policy?
After WWII, attention shifted to upgrading and protecting existing systems, adopting soft path engineering, improving metering, reducing leaks, and addressing pollution through major acts like the Clean Water Act and Safe Water Drinking Act, while pursuing smarter, less invasive methods to secure water for urban growth.
Episode 226 - The Catskill Aqueduct with Professor Kevin Bone
Q: What makes the Catskill Aqueduct an engineering marvel, according to Kevin Bone?
Bone emphasizes the gravity-fed design, the long distance involved, and the sealed deep-tunnel sections under the Hudson River, which together required innovative materials, labor organization, and meticulous geologic surveying to ensure reliable water delivery for New York City.
Episode 224 - Ulster County Beekeeper Rich Kurtz
Q: How many bees typically live in a honeybee colony?
A typical honeybee hive can house around 60,000 bees, with a division of labor across roles such as nurses, guards, and foragers.
Episode 224 - Ulster County Beekeeper Rich Kurtz
Q: What is Varroa mite management and why is it important?
Varroa mites are a major threat; beekeepers monitor mite loads and use approved miticides or other strategies to keep levels low going into winter, as high mite loads weaken bees and increase disease risk.
Episode 224 - Ulster County Beekeeper Rich Kurtz
Q: Can you tell us what a bee inspector is and what they do?
A bee inspector visits hives to ensure diseases like American foulbrood are not present, checking for contamination and advising on proper hive management, including burning infected wax when necessary.
